Young runners set for series finale
five events at the National Sports Centre.
Unlike previous races in the series, tomorrow's competition will be on the track with boys and girls from 8-10 years-old and 11-12 competing over 1500 metres while the 13-15 year-olds will race over 3000 metres.
Competitors in each group will race in heats and their times will then determine their final overall placing. In each age group the top 15 in the current points standings will run in the same heat, a format designed to produce some exciting finishes as the youngsters try to move up the standings or, in the case of some age group leaders, maintain their unbeaten records.
With 167 runners registered for the series, the event has proven a resounding success in its first year and another large turnout is expected for the finale.
Also on tomorrow's schedule is a developmental track and field meet organised by Bermuda Pacers. Once their series heat is over, juniors will get the chance to take part in other shorter track races and field events.
From the last four races, five out of the six age group winners have already been decided. However, much attention will focus on the boys 11-12 group where Terrence Dill and Chayce Smith will be racing to determine who comes out on top and earns a trip to the All-American Cross Country Camp in Asheville, North Carolina in July.
Both Dill and Smith have two first place finishes to date but Smith, who has a second place to Dill's third, leads the standings by just five points (140-135). Whoever wins will finish on top.
However, the field will include some track specialists, including Front Street mile winner Tyler Abbott, Geoffrey Smith and Coyatito Smith and a win by any of them could confuse the standings although Smith and Dill are unlikely to be caught unless they finish out of the points completely.
Mark Morrison (13-15 boys), Tiffany Eatherley (13-15 girls), Cody Smith (8-10 boys) and Jessica Palmer (8-10 girls) have 100 percent records to defend and have already booked their places to the US.
Flora Duffy, with three wins and a second, has secured the girls age group and will start as strong favourite to win tomorrow's race as she is the current Front Street mile record holder for her age group.
Henry Talbot, who has narrowly lost to Morrison this season, will be hoping to turn the tables while Cody Lima could face a stiff challenge from the much improved Carlo Paynter and Kor Von Tucker, currently second and third in the series.
Jessica Palmer has been dominant in the girls 8-10 but could face a stiff challenge from Kimberley Fisher, daughter of well known runners Jennifer and Eddie Fisher. Fisher has finished second in the last three races after missing the first race of the series.
She can take over second place overall if she beats Ashley Brooks and Shellicia McKenzie, her most likely challengers. Although Eatherley has been assured of the title in her group, she should get a good test on the track from Shar-Dae Whitter who knocked 24 seconds off her previous best time in the 1500 metres.
Once the final standings have been tabulated, any junior who has completed at least four of the five races in the series will be entered into a draw, with the winner accompanying the age group winners to the running camp. The draw will take place at the prize presentation for the series winners later this month.
Entry forms for Saturday's races and the Pacers track events are available from Sportseller, Wheels Ltd, Sports R Us and Winners Edge. The deadline is today at 5.00 p.m. Entry fee of $4 includes entry into both the KPMG race and any track and field events.
