That goal salvaged a 4-4 draw in front of a large crowd, including the league champions Devonshire Colts who took a break from their motorcade celebrations to watch the contest.
Somerset built up an early 2-0 lead on goals from Mel Roberts and Clyde Best before three goals from Noel (Sub) Smith, Mike Whalley and Charlie Fox put St.
George's ahead 3-2 at half-time.
Somerset, also containing the likes of Richard Simmons, Larry Hunt, Jerry Lynn Simons and Dwaine Richardson, regained the lead with two second half goals from Richardson and Gladstone Robinson. They were on their way to another victory before Rayner's late equaliser earned St. George's a draw.
The St. George's team also included Teddy Swainson, who returned from abroad, Arthur Bean, Russell Knights, Milton Jones, Gary Darrell and Dennis Wainwright. Jones and Phillip Galloway of Somerset were noted the men of the match.
The game was played as a tribute to the players from the two teams who were members of Bermuda's first touring national squad which visited Iceland in the mid-1960s. Also honoured at the presentation after the game at RAA Club were Sinclair (Toast) Williams, the first St. George's Colts coach and referee Charlie Marshall who officiated the match. Earl Hart made the presentations.
Proceeds collected will go towards helping fund the St. George's Colts junior tour.
Somerset won the inaugural match 4-3 before romping to a 4-0 win last year.
ATHLETICS ATH Jaynae Dillas and Lonnie Bascome warmed up for the upcoming inter-school sports with victories in the 12-and-under girls and boys races during half-time of the women's and men's FA Cup finals at National Stadium on Sunday.
Trying something new, Bermuda Football Association and Bermuda Track and Field Association put together the two 800 metre races as an added attraction.
Even in the blustery conditions the youngsters made a great effort and the crowd responded with cheers of encouragement as Dillas of Prospect Primary led home the girls in 2:34.0 with Danielle Watson of Heron Bay second in 2:37.1 and Cheri Minors of Warwick Academy third in 2:37.6 Francis Patton's Tiffany Eatherley was fourth in 2.38.7 while Donneka Mahler of Bermuda High completed the top five with a time of 2:44.5.
In a closer boys race, Lonnie Bascome nipped Henry Talbot in a sprint finish to win by a 10th of a second. Bascome, of Sandys, broke the tape in 2:27.9 while Talbot finished in 2:28.0. Ezra Ararat of Prospect was third in 2:32.6, Kai-jay Davis of West Pembroke fourth in 2:35.0 and Shane Morrissey of West End fifth in 2:37.0.
A total of 10 girls and eight boys participated.
