Bean warns against Cup complacency

despite victory over Costa Rica,

despite victory over Costa Rica, will be looking to put on a show before their home crowd this morning when they meet the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States in a crucial second and final group match at the Whaler Inn courts in Southampton.

Non-playing captain Steve Bean admitted last night that he would probably again play Ricky Mallory and Donald Evans in today's singles after both were triumphant against Costa Rica, and again team up Michael Way and James Collieson, Thursday's losing doubles pair.

But with captains not required to name their line-ups until half an hour before match-time, that selection could still change.

Bean said he intended to talk to the players last night to discuss what is shaping up to be a more important match than earlier had been anticipated.

After Costa Rica defeated OECS 2-1 yesterday -- OECS at one stage held match point in one of the singles before losing -- Bermuda could be denied promotion if they lost 3-0 today. A 2-1 win for OECS would mean all Group IV teams ended with identical records and promotion would be decided on games won.

"We're confident, but we can't afford to be complacent. This is a crucial match for us,'' said Bean.

Regardless, Bermuda, with home court advantage, should be firm favourites over a team they defeated last year to register their first Davis Cup victory, and should clinch top place in their group and a berth in next year's American Zone Group III.
