Bermuda teams still in hunt for Goodwill title
as the leading local team on the second day of the 45th Bermuda Goodwill Tournament.
Belmont, led by pro Cornell Bean and also featuring Trevor Boyce, Ervin Faries and Peter Shaw, tied for the best round of the day at Castle Harbour with the Niakwa Country Club, from Winnipeg, which put them three strokes off the lead in joint fifth place.
But overnight joint leaders Port Royal and Ocean View, last year's defending champions, both slipped -- Port Royal to third after a round of 62 at the Mid Ocean Club gave them 119 overall and Ocean View to 11th after carding 65 at Port Royal.
The competition is a best-ball tournament in which the teams play a round on each of four courses -- Mid Ocean, Ocean View, Castle Harbour and Belmont.
Dedham Country and Polo Club, of Massachusetts, took over at the top of the net division with Toronto Golf Club.
Dedham, with pro Jimmy Noris at the helm, had the best net round at Mid Ocean yesterday, their 59 combining with a 58 at Belmont on Monday for an overall score of 117.
Toronto, with pro Douglas Rankin, enjoyed a 57 at Belmont, which traditionally yields the lowest scores of the week.
Meanwhile, another Massachusetts team, Meadow Brook, were one stroke off the lead after shooting a day's best 55 at Belmont. Their pro is Ed Whalley, who will be keen to do well after being the centre of controversy last year when he had to be replaced because of an injury to his hand suffered in the earlier Belmont Invitational.
Also on 118 were Tupper Lake Country Club, of New York State, captained by the big hitting Brent Smith who, like Whalley, took part in last week's Belmont Invitational, finishing 19th. They shot 60 at Castle Harbour to add to their 58 at the Mid Ocean club on Monday.
Tupper Lake are also second in the gross division, two shots behind Salem Country Club, who remain in contention for the net title.
Salem, with pro Kirk Hanefeld, are tied with Belmont and Holly Hill, of New Jersey on 120. Separating those three and Ocean View are Lakewood Country Club, of Maryland, and Lago Mar Country Club, of Plantation, Florida, both on 121.
Today is a rest day for the teams as the pros compete in the Goodwill Championships at Port Royal (see story, Page 36).
FOUR OF THE BEST -- Pro Dwayne Pearman (left) with his Ocean View team of Frank Morgan, John Williams and Bill Pitt will be hoping to retain their Goodwill Tournament net title this week. Leading after the first round, the Bermuda team dropped to 11th yesterday.
