BFA to discuss Cup tie security

later this week to discuss the possibility of extra security measures for this weekend's FA Cup tie between Somerset Trojans and Boulevard.

The discussions follow the fighting between fans of the two sides at last month's First Division match at the ground which led to the stabbing of a Police officer.

No exact time and date has been set for the meeting, but BFA general secretary David Sabir said: "We are going to sit down with them and see what we are going to do -- if indeed anything needs doing.

"We don't think Somerset were to blame for the incident and would hate to think such things are concentrated there. It could have happened anywhere.'' Asked if he had been in contact with Police to talk about plans for the game he would only say that the BFA were in regular communication with them about a variety of things.

The BFA reacted angrily to the outbreak of violence at the league match on November 25 which they said had nothing to do with football and blamed on gang warfare.

Fans from Somerset and Hamilton, who had been goading each other throughout the evening, finally spilled onto the edge of the pitch and began fighting.

Pc Paul Simons, one of a Police task force called to break up the trouble, was stabbed twice and spent a number of hours in the hospital's intensive care unit recovering from his injuries.

Somerset president Reggie Pearman said he had not been contacted by the BFA over the meeting but was confident there would be no trouble at the match.

"It's a day match and that's completely different. You can see much more of what's going on.'' Referring to the original incident, he said: "I wasn't on the Island at the time but from what I've heard it wasn't football related.'' One witness to the violence claimed it was an escalation of confrontations between gangs from Somerset and Town during the summer Harbour Nights events.

"They hate each other,'' she said, warning: "It's only going to get worse.'' A Police spokesman said he didn't know about any specific arrangements for the match but the task force would be patrolling the Island as usual.
