Bromby breaks through in Star Class
Sport Regatta yesterday, marking the first time he'd captured top spot in an overseas event in the Star Class.
Bromby won the event with a spectacular showing on Saturday, compiling a first place finish in one of the day's four races. He grabbed third place twice and was also second.
Yesterday he slipped to sixth, but was able to discard the results from his poorest showing.
"Saturday was a really hot day for us,'' said Bromby, still sounding elated from his performance. "We've been knocking on the door a few times, so it's nice to finally have a first place finish.'' Bromby, racing in a new boat, finished ahead of top overseas rivals such as George Sabo, Mark Mansfield and Eric Doyle, all ranked in the top 10 of the Star class in 1994. The fleet was made up of 18 boats.
The Bermudian came close to winning a couple of times last year, finishing second at the Bacardi Cup and European Spring Championships.
He leaves today for Miami where he'll compete in the Miami Olympic Classes Regatta which begins on Wednesday.
Other Bermudians Malcolm Smith, the reigning Sunfish world champion, and Mickey Berkeley were also involved in the just completed regatta, although details of their final positions were unavailable.
It was known that Smith had made it through to the gold fleet among the Laser Class, while Berkeley was said to be struggling near the foot of the Fin Class.
