Clinton leaves his mark for Boulevard
The transfer market provided Boulevard with a first-time dividend when Clinton Caisey, who this season rejoined them after a season with North Village, scored the winning goal one minute from regulation time to give the Blazers their first-ever victory in the Charity Cup.
In Saturday night's season opener at Somerset Cricket Club a crowd of 2,500 watched as the diminutive midfielder Caisey floored the home team when he put the finishing touches to a pass from skipper Dwight (Payback) Warren to prevent the game going into extra time.
The visitors were able to at last breathe a sigh of relief with the triumph after having been unsuccessful in two previous appearances in the final.
Although the fast-moving game had a few stimulating moments it proved to be more of a hard, interesting game than one that contained a lot of excitement.
There was never much to choose between the two teams and the trend throughout saw both build up neat attacks only to continually have the approach work peter out tamely as they reached the penalty area. And shooting from this distance seldom to be in the minds of both attacks.
Although the Trojans' skipper Brian Simons cleared a ball off the goal-line after 20 minutes the first real bit of excitement came when his own left-winger Kwame Tucker masterfully got around right-back Johnny Boyles only to see his 15-yard blast brilliantly tipped over by goalkeeper Mitchell Steede.
Boulevard came back with chances but Kenny Hill and Neil Robinson put efforts wide. Newcomer Stevie Wade though tested Gladwin Edness in the Trojans' goal with a hard snap-shot from 16 yards after 38 minutes only to see the goalkeeper dive full length to make the save.
The teams battled on to gain supremacy in the second half but neither had the capability in this opener of taking the initiative, but the home team began to show signs of tiring first.
However, after 70 minutes, a mix-up in defence between centre-half Wayne Richardson and his goalkeeper Steede saw Franklyn Simmons capitalise on the slip-up to score from close in.
The Trojans were unlucky in not going two goals up seven minutes later when a wicked drive by skipper Simons from 18 yards crashed off the upper half of the bar and went for a goal kick.
Eight minutes later though Boulevard equalised when substitute Dean Boyles netted from close range after taking a cross from the right by Johnny Boyles.
Just when extra time seemed inevitable Boulevard clinched it when skipper Warren came in on the right goal-line and chipped a ball in to Caisey who managed to put it home from only a few yards.
