DRC may have Camel Cup lifeline

by a Bermuda Cricket Board of Control decision to have the June 6 defeat to St. David's erased.

Devonshire, who won the Camel Cup in 1991 and '92, protested the loss on the grounds that fast bowler Dale Fox was allowed to bowl an 11th over.

Fox, embroiled in a chucking controversy that has effectively brought his career to a standstill, was no-balled by square leg umpire Oliver Bain in the match at Devonshire Rec. and skipper James Pace completed the over.

Fox later returned at Bain's end and claimed two of the last three wickets in five balls of his 11th over as Rec. collapsed to a four-run defeat.

Though the board would not confirm this yesterday, it is believed that a recommendation to have the match replayed was made as long ago as late June.

But, to this day, correspondence has not been sent to the clubs concerned and the fixture has suddenly taken immense proportion with Devonshire on the fringe of the top four.

Should a replay be ordered, a place in the 1994 Camel Cup would be a real possibility for Albert Steede's team with Cleveland the only team they can likely overhaul.

Bailey's Bay and Cleveland are third and fourth on 22 points, three ahead of Devonshire, but Bay play Social Club in their final game on Sunday while Cleveland face outgoing champions Western Stars.

Devonshire will be expected to defeat Flatts on Sunday and will then have it all to play for whenever the replay date is announced, likely to be September 26.

"This helps our chances quite considerably,'' said Steede yesterday.

Pace, for whom this has been an arduous season with St. David's having lost the Eastern Counties Cup to Bailey's Bay, would not comment on the issue.

But St. David's are a completely different side from the group that shocked Rec. in the midst of a seven-match winning streak.

Since the Eastern Counties, they have suffered losses to St. George's, Bailey's Bay and Cleveland, which effectively scuppered their own Camel Cup ambitions.

A make-up match, after the September 25 KO Cup final if they beat Rec. on Saturday, would not go down too well.

There will be a meeting for the BCBC selection committee at 6 p.m. and all national squad players at 7 p.m. on Monday at Warwick Workman's Club.
