First round breeze for Frana
the XL Bermuda Open but the 30-year-old Argentinian wasn't too excited.
He was the first to admit that his first round opponent, local favourite Bryan Shelton, wasn't on his game. And he also recognised the draw had him facing number five seed Vince Spadea next today.
"I didn't expect it to be that easy,'' Frana said following his 6-1, 6-2 destruction of Shelton on centre court yesterday. "It was not a good day for him.'' Frana, a semi-finalist here a year ago, could be excused if he was the one with a bad day. He only arrived on Monday night after spending 20 hours travelling to get here from Santiago, Chile, where he represented Argentina in a Davis Cup tie on Sunday.
He admitted to "a little bit'' of jet lag but "enough to deal with. I felt okay on the court.'' Ranked 100 in the world, Frana showed no effects against Shelton, spraying shots all over the court and handling the American's serve without difficulty.
"I saw he was out of confidence so I just tried to put the ball in play,'' he said.
Frana plays Spadea tomorrow, with the winner heading towards a likely quarter-final showdown against third seed Sandon Stolle, who sees his first singles action this afternoon against Luis Adrian Morejon, a last-minute substitute for Filip Dewulf.
Also getting into the swing of things is second seed Byron Black, who takes on qualifier Jerome Hanquez at noon.
Less than seven hours later, Black teams up with Grant Connell, as the number one seeded doubles pair play the Aussie duo of Scott Draper and Jason Stoltenberg.
Number six seed Patrik Fredriksson of Sweden opens today's action against Lucas Arnold.
Meanwhile, another Belgian, Kris Goosens, and a New Zealander, Brett Steven, won their first round matches in straight sets yesterday, the former over Guillermo Canas and the latter over American Steve Bryan.
Goosens, ranked 153rd in the world, will meet number eight see Dennis Van Scheppingen in the second round; Steven will be watching what happens today between Black and Hanquez.
