Garland clinches junior title

overnight leads to win the overall men's and ladies' titles in the Atlantic International Junior Golf Championships at Belmont yesterday.

Garland fired a five-over-par 77 to finish on 297, five shots ahead of his Columbus College team-mate, American Chad Glanton, while Duncombe struggled round in 95, but still managed to stay ahead of local Lindsey Sims by six strokes.

"I'm really pleased that I could come back, hit the ball solid and win the tournament after my (bike) accident last year,'' said Garland. "I was really disappointed at not being able to play last year because I thought I had more of a chance. But I feel I've worked hard.

"It's too bad that Chad (Glanton) couldn't keep his game up.'' Also in the 18-21 division, American Ken Pullin carded 79 to finish third.

"This little island is golfing paradise and this tournament has been a real experience for me,'' said Pullin afterwards.

Bermuda's Robbie Spurling returned yesterday's best round of 73 to win the 15-17 age group by 11 strokes. Patrick Graham, one shot behind going into the final round, shot 87 allowing American Andy Little to slide by into second place.

Overnight leader in the 13-14 division, American Kyle Miller held his four shot lead over countryman William Weil to win that division. And 12-year-old Aaron James continued his fine play by firing an 84 to win the 12 and under division by a comfortable 11 shots.
