Hill spares Bay's blushes
Warwick 194 Some fine fielding by Corey Hill saved Bailey's Bay from an embarrassing defeat as they almost paid the price for resting key players at Sea Breeze Oval on Sunday.
Bay were without Irving Romaine, Noel Gibbons, Ricky Hill and Clarkie Trott as they appeared to take their winless opponents lightly.
And inn the end Warwick were only denied by a couple of crucial wickets late in their innings and three important catches held by Hill, which left the visitors 17 runs short of a major upset.
A fourth wicket stand of 72 between 15-year-old Dion Stovell and wicketkeeper Perry Scott turned the match around for Warwick who recovered from 50-3 to 122. Bay captain Charlie Marshall broke that stand in his first over when he had Stovell caught behind for 31.
In his next over Marshall trapped Quinton King lbw to make it 128-5. But then another stubborn stand of 23 between Scott and captain Reginald Pitcher kept Warwick in the game before Pitcher played a bad shot, skying a catch to mid-wicket where Hill held on.
But even after Scott's departure for 55 at 161-8, Warwick fought back. This time a stand of 33 between tailenders Jason Williams and Steven Bremar took them to within 17 runs of victory when indecision over a second run after a Hill mis-field in the extra covers left both batsmen looking at each other in mid-crease as Hill's throw to the batsman's end ran out Bremar for 14.
That wicket effectively ended Warwick's challenge as in the next over Williams went for a big hit and Hill held his third catch at mid-wicket to seal the win.
Marshall claimed three for 35 from 10 overs while Hill, Dennis Pilgrim and Stephen Outerbridge all took two each.
Bay used up 32.1 of their overs for a 210 total which included 58 from opener Dennis Trott, 38 from Marshall and 39 from tailender Pilgrim.
Stovell claimed four for 35 from 5.1 overs while his new-ball partner Williams, had two for 38 and Pitcher two for 35.
Cleveland 238 PHC 174 Jason Simons scored 70 and captain Aaron Adams 65 as Cleveland beat PHC by 64 runs at Wellington Oval.
James Pace led the PHC bowling with four for 62 from 10 overs of spin while Charles Symons claimed two for 50.
The Cleveland total proved too steep for PHC who had three run outs in their innings. Cal Waldron was their high man with 36 not out while Mark Smith scored 32 and opener Sheridan Ming 25. Merkel Smith took two for 34 for Cleveland, the only bowler to finish with more than one wicket.
