race in the United States as local riders enjoyed a busy weekend both home and abroad.

Hubbard, a professional with the New Jersey Navigators, was in top form in the Killington Stage Race in Vermont as team-mate Trent Klasna took overall honours.

In the 91-mile Brandon Gap road race, in what Hubbard described as something of a `freak' breakaway, Klasna escaped with a group of riders and went on to win the stage and hold a surprise first day lead of six minutes on the main contenders. Hubbard finished 14th on the day.

On stage two on Sunday in a fast and furious 45-mile criterium, Klasna totally stamped his authority on the event when he launched off the front in a four-man breakaway while Hubbard and his other team-mates blocked any chase-downs.

A clearly in-form Klasna lapped the field on the one mile loop course and broke clear of the other three riders to take the victory.

On the final day the Navigators riders controlled the pack in the 126-mile mountainous stage by keeping a fast pace at the front, allowing Klasna to attack on the final hill and secure overall victory.

A delighted Hubbard said afterwards: "It was a great team effort. After the first stage it was a matter of trying to protect Trent who is riding so strongly right now.

"It is a major victory for us. Trent will be part of the team for the Conyers, Dill and Pearman Grand Prix later this month.'' Although details were sketchy, Bermuda's top female rider Melanie Claude put in another strong performance in the women's division, finishing 14th overall even after crashing on the final day.

The appearance at Killington was another notch on Claude's international belt as she gained further experience ahead of November's World B Championships in Uruguay.

Veteran male rider Jeff Payne also completed the Killington event, finishing 19th in his division.

Meanwhile, on the local front, Steve Millington continued his impressive form as he completed his first full season in Bermuda. In hot and humid conditions, Millington overcame strong challenges from Duncan Simons, Kevin Topple, Peter Eccles and Mike Lee on the now familiar hill technical course at Southside.

One attack after another was pulled back throughout the 45-mile race until two laps to go when Millington made the decisive move and broke away from the other riders. At the line he was timed at 1:54.31 with Simons, Topple, Eccles and Lee splintering on the last lap as they chased Millington. They finished in 1:54.57, 1:55.04, 1:55.25 and 1:56.33 respectively.

In other categories, Trevor Hedges was a clear winner in category three, having stayed with the category two riders throughout his 37-mile race. Vic Ball continued to dominate the veterans division over 37 miles while Andrew Kain took honours in the novice category.

Julia Hawley was the women's winner while Carolyn Conway topped the women's veterans' group. The Herring brothers, Jonathan and Matthew, won their categories while Geoffrey Smith was tops among 11-12 boys. Laura Ruse won the under-10 girls and Tim Fox the competitive under-10 boys race.
