Hubbard wins class one in tight battle with Rego
Longtail Race organised by the Bermuda Offshore Cruising Association last weekend.
Starting on the South Shore near Pompano Beach on Saturday, the 24-mile course took the fleet east to Mills buoy, several miles off St. David's before finishing in St. George's Harbour.
Buddy Rego's class one Tsunami led the way along South Shore and crossed the finish mark first, just ahead of Tonka , piloted by Paul Hubbard.
There was a tight battle in class three as Four Flags (Brian Billings), Thistledew (Bobby Oatley), Reckless (Greg Vasic) and New Wave (Bob McCutcheon) finished within four minutes of each other, with Royal Bermuda Yacht Club commodore Billings' garnering class line honours.
Among the cruising class, Claude Guay, with little tactical work needed due to the favourable winds, used superior boat speed to sail his C&C 35 Temptation to an easy win over Elle (Romano Erba) and No Regrets (Matthew Cairney).
Meanwhile, competitors were greeted by shifty winds from the south west on Sunday and three boats -- Tsunami, Tonka and New Wave -- took full advantage to break away from the fleet, setting their spinnakers for the downwind leg through Town Cut.
A reach into Hamilton Harbour followed a windward leg along North Shore and it was Tonka this time able to usurp Tsunami in grabbing line honours as well as the class one title.
After a slow start Colin Couper's Vivace came on late to be third across, while in class three Reckless prevailed ahead of New Wave and Delphius .
Temptation again was tops in the cruising division.
