Jennings' strike finishes off Colts
North Village followed up their three-goal burst in their season-opening Charity Cup victory over PHC a week ago by polishing off Devonshire Colts with a similar haul of goals in this Martonmere Cup first-round clash at BAA field on Saturday night.
David Thomas stroked home a penalty after 24 minutes while substitute Dwight Warren got the second after 67 minutes and new boy Keith Jennings finished Colts off with a splendid shot with three minutes remaining.
Colts lone tally came from the boot of their live-wire substitute Marvin Belboda who revitalised an attack that had accomplished little all night.
Belboda's strike came after 75 minutes when his team trailed 2-0.
While rookie coach Scott Morton probably was not overwhelmed by his team's performance, there has to be some satisfaction with their success so early in the season.
There is no denying that they deserved victory, the young team occasionally displaying glimpses of supreme confidence against opponents that had great difficulty in finding their rhythm.
Except for the first 10 minutes of the second half and for a period after Belboda came on, Colts struggled to match the speedier Village side.
Village dominated from the start with Tafari Outerbridge and Kevin Jennings slamming shots over the bar from just outside the box after 17 and 22 minutes respectively.
Then they got the reward they deserved after 24 minutes when Thomas converted from the penalty spot after Vernon Tankard was brought down in the box by Hopde Burrows of Colts.
With Colts getting good production out of hard-working Quincy Aberdeen down the right flank they caused the defence some concern, but these attacks often broke down outside the penalty box.
For the rest of the half Village threatened with Keith Jennings again blasting a 22-yarder over and Sergio Goater and speedy Kevin Jennings putting shots wide.
However the tune changed once play re-started with Colts taking the initiative immediately by creating two chances that should have been put away -- last season's top scorer in the league Aljame Zuill being the culprit on both occasions.
After 52 minutes the lanky striker slammed a shot into the side netting from close range when he should have done better and a few minutes later goalkeeper Zane Hendrickson advanced to block his shot from point blank range.
Village forced their way back into contention and Kevin Jennings blasted a shot against the post from 14 yards after 65 minutes.
Then Warren came through with the second, taking advantage of a cross from the right to drill a shot home from 12 yards.
Belboda's presence gave the Colts attack immediate spark but while his dribbling opened holes in the defence his team-mates just were unable to apply the finishing touches.
It was only fitting that Belboda be rewarded with the goal that put Colts in contention for the first time in the game -- the foward blasting home a cross from 15 yards from the ambitious Aberdeen on the right.
But before Colts could reinforce themselves and apply further damage, Village regained their touch and finished well on top.
Kevin Jennings hurried a shot wide from an angle close in after 84 minutes and Keith Jennings' blast from 22 yards was brilliantly palmed away by the diving Cymande Davis in the Colts goal.
Keith Jennings put the game completely out of reach for Village when he struck home the third goal from 16 yards with three minutes left.
