Kline, Stout win doubles tournament

players last week to win the sixth annual Sir Michael Edwardes doubles tournament, the only event of its kind organised by Bermuda Squash Racquets Association.

In Division A, Kline and Stout racked up a perfect 2-0 record over each of their opponents, David Hyland and Liz Martin, Rod Holloway and Bob Stewart, and Michael Edwardes and Sarah Bishop.

The latter pair came within a point of upsetting the record but at 14-all Kline and Stout won the decisive sudden-death point.

Second in Division A were Hyland and Martin with 2-1 wins over the other two teams.

Division B saw a number of fiercely contested matches with some of the BSRA's top singles players, Colin Alexander, Kirk Caza and Melrindo Caines among the teams. Many of the matches were delayed by incessant calls for interference as players jockeyed for position on courts meant only for singles play.

Surprisingly to some, it was the team of Eugene Bothello and Janine Bentley who won all of their matches against Andy McDougall and Kirk Caza, Colin Alexander and Kim Carter and Mel Caines and Dave Conte. McDougall and Caza finished runners-up.

Bothello and Bentley later attributed their success to regular doubles sessions with Caza, Stout and Bishop.

The finals saw Kline and Stout square off against Bothello and Bentley in a best-of-three match.

Having established a comfortable 12-8 lead in the first game, Kline and Stout had to watch as fine shotmaking from their opponents allowed them to turn the tables and serve for the first game at 14-12.

However, Kline's consistent cross-lobbing from the front backhand court put Bothello on the defensive while Stout's speed at the front enabled him to pick off Bentley's short shots. Kline and Stout took the first game 15-14 on an unforced error by their opponents.

In the second game Kline and Stout established a comfortable lead and never looked in serious danger as they ran out 15-8 winners to wrap up the victory.

It marked Stout's third triumphy in the event, having won it previously in 1992 and '95.

Fifteen-year-old Tallent Clarke and his nine-year-old partner, Andrew Stout, won all five of their matches to score a decisive victory in the junior event being played for the second year.

In thanking Sir Michael Edwardes, former president of the English SRA, BSRA president and losing finalist, Eugene Bothello, promised more doubles action for club members.

"This is an area of the game that I would like to see us promote more, given the level of ability and enjoyment we have witnessed this evening,'' he said.
