Leagues go to CAC squad, Toronto
display in defeating previously unbeaten Mocklow's Magic 1-0 in the final match of the women's round-robin phase at National Sports Club.
Centre-forward Lisa DeSilva scored the game's only goal two minutes following the restart, earning victory for the home side, who amazingly have not conceded a goal in six matches so far.
A pass from Maria Pichery found the stick of DeSilva, who was a major force in attack, outside the `D' and the centre-forward proceeded to sweep past two opposing defenders before planting the ball past Magic goalkeeper Christie Edgecomb.
The goal was a culmination of intense pressure exerted by the energetic Bermuda team.
Magic were by no means overwhelmed, as they too enjoyed periods of domination where they were able to pin Bermuda on defence.
However, fine work in midfield was wasted as plays constantly broke down up front.
Both teams had come into yesterday's match undefeated from five matches. The winners were guaranteed the round-robin title and a first-round bye in the knockout phase. Magic, with a vastly superior goal average, needed just a draw after steamrolling past their previous opponents.
"It showed that the ladies have worked hard over the summer and that they are deserving of this victory,'' said coach Nigel Pichery following the thrilling triumph. "We will take all comers! We will take them here and we will take them abroad.
"I think it was an overall splendid team effort. There were no individual players on either team.
"We have to give Mocklow's Magic some credit, they played really well and put us to the test, but we were just successful.'' Still, everyone will enter with a clean slate today, knowing that one mistake could prove very costly.
Pichery immediately cautioned his troops following their win, emphasising that they maintain focus on the next goal.
"I've just told the ladies that tomorrow it's business as usual,'' he said.
"We've set our sights on the knockout title, we've already won the league. We can celebrate tonight ... but tomorrow it's back to it.'' Meanwhile, Regina Spencer, the Magic's sturdy full-back admitted that her team was a bit overwhelmed at times by the sheer speed of the local girls and that they would have to regroup before heading into the next round of competition.
"It was a good game and I felt that the CAC Squad was doing a lot of running,'' explained Spencer. "They're very good athletes and beat us to the ball a few times and were able to be a little faster than us, but overall it was an excellent game.
"Definitely it's good playing a team like the CAC going into the play-offs now. It gets you ready and we're such.'' Remaining women's matches saw Toronto Ladies down Pingree as well as Babson College 3-0, Wesleyan University defeat Bermuda Under 21s 1-0 before losing to BSC Young Boys 2-1, Boys also got past Babson 3-0. Magic earlier hammered the Under 21s 6-1, CAC Squad edged Flashy Forties 1-0, but Forties made up for that defeat in mauling Pingree 4-0.
Meanwhile, in men's play Toronto completed a perfect run. They beat the Bermuda National squad 3-2 and followed that with a 2-1 triumph over defending champions Staffhawks. Toronto ended 4-0 and enter the knockout as firm favourites for the title.
Other action had the National Squad getting by the Bermuda Select 2-0, while the latter also drew with Greenwich 1-1.
HIT AND MISS -- CAC Squad's Joanne Wilson fluffs on this attempt in front of goal yesterday against Mocklow's Magic but the local side had the last say in a 1-0 victory.
