Lister placed 79th and Lightbourn 96th in the field of 345 for the men's singles competition.

Bowling on lanes oiled more heavily than the ones he trains on at Warwick Lanes, Lister adapted superbly to clock up a pinfall of 1,213 in six games for an average of 202.1, just two pins short of his average at home.

Lightbourn, the Island's top bowler this year, totalled 1,202 for a 200.3 average, well short of his 215 domestic average.

Lister's fellow 1998 Commonwealth Games silver medallist Antoine Jones placed 149th with a pinfall of 1,166 and an average of 194.3.

Of the other Bermuda bowlers competing, Chris Leverock finished 262nd (179.3), Michael McCallum 273rd (177.6) and Steven Riley 308th (169.6).

Spokeswoman Thalia Lightbourne said: "We expected more of our people to place in the top 100, but the conditions are extremely oily and they have found it difficult to adjust quickly.

"But it's fantastic that Conrad and Dean have made the top 100 and we believe the team has fared well in the conditions and they have done Bermuda proud.

"We expect to do our best in the team event, as our bowlers are used to bowling for each other.'' The tournament continues this week with doubles, trios, the team event and the Masters event.
