Local golfers finish strongly

54 to finish 18th overall out of 100 boys in the 12-and-under age group of the Junior World Championships in San Diego.

In the boys 15-17 age group, Michael Sims made the cut to the final round for the second year in a row as he went round in 77 for a 54-hole total of 226. He played his final round yesterday.

The others participating did not fare so well. Robbie Spurling, who needed to shoot 74 to make the cut, ballooned to an 84 and a three round total of 237.

Quinton Sherlock finished in style with his best round of 77 to finish on 240 while Andrew Trott also managed his best round, an 81 to finish on 247.

All four boys in the 15-17 age group will be travelling to Nashville, Tennessee to represent Bermuda in the AJGA team championships against teams from the various US states and other countries.

In this event, played over 54 holes, the best three scores for each team will count each day.

KYME SHOWS PROMISE IN CAIRO SQU Kyme shows promise in Cairo Nick Kyme stormed into the quarter-finals of the consolation event at the World Junior men's Squash Championships in Cairo, Egypt with a decisive 3-0 win over Fahd Al-Dalili of Kuwait earlier this week.

In the process Kyme set a new Bermuda record of two wins in the event. In what proved to be an aggressive contest, Kyme'sconsistent play overshadowed his error-prone opponent to win 9-0, 9-7, 9-5.

Kyme bowed out of the final eight the following day when he went down 3-0 at the hands of Andre Holderegger of Switzerland. The Swiss player's persistence and patience paid off and despite many long rallies Kyme was unable to come up with the winners.

A spirited effort with bursts of courageous play from Daniele Bortoli allowed him to snatch five points from New Zealander Douglas Carmichael before going down 9-0, 9-2, 9-3.

Play begins in the team event tomorrow.

CRAIG AND GAVIN WIN SINGLES TITLES TEN Craig and Gavin win singles titles Craig Bean and Gavin Manders won yesterday's two finals in the Port Royal Junior Tournament which winds down today with eight more finals.

In the under 14 singles final Bean beat Andrew Simons 6-3, 6-0 while Manders got by Sam Riihiluoma 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) in the under 12 final.

Today Amy Roache will appear in two singles finals when she takes on Zarah DeSilva in the under 12 girls final this morning and Crystal Lambert in the under 14 final at noon.

Also in two singles finals is Daniel Miller who will contest Craig Bean in the under 16 final event and Jensen Bascome in the under 18 final.
