Magic, CAC squad on collision course
dominant forces of the Women's Division yesterday after the second day of play at the Bermuda Hockey Festival.
All of which makes their showdown at National Sports Club tomorrow (3.30 p.m.) the pivotal match of round-robin play before the play-offs begin at the weekend.
Mocklow's, the defending champions, have streamrolled past all four of their opponents so far, including a pair of 3-0 defeats yesterday over Toronto Ladies and Wesleyan University.
Heading into tomorrow's round-robin finale, the all-star team made up of players from the United States, Canada and England have scored 17 goals in four games. Yesterday, their offensive thrust was supplied by Cindy Gahunia, who scored two goals in the morning session against Toronto Ladies and then notched another two against Wesleyan later in the day.
But Bermuda's CAC Squad are not about to hand over the bragging rights of the tournament. After beginning the day with a 1-0 victory over Babson College on a goal by Lisa DeSilva, they returned to the pitch later in the afternoon to inflict a humiliating 10-0 defeat on Pingree School.
DeSilva added two more goals, but the key producer was Rhonda Rawlins who potted four. Scoring single goals were Joanne Wilson, Tracy McPhee, Andrea Parker and Marcia Ford.
"Mocklow's will be our big test,'' underscored CAC coach Nigel Pichery last night. "The team who wins (on Friday) will probably win the women's division this weekend.'' Meantime, BSC Young Boys, from Berne, Switzerland, are suddenly one of the most talked-about teams of the tournament after two convincing triumphs -- a 7-0 victory over the Bermuda Under-21 squad and a 5-0 drubbing of beleaguered Pingree. They are now considered the sleeper of the women's sides, roaring back from two low-key draws on opening day.
Defending champions Staffhawks kept their stranglehold on the Men's Division with an easy 3-1 triumph over the Bermuda Select on goals from Paddy Osborne, Stuart Perfit and Julian Jenkins.
Also with a sparkling 2-0 record are Toronto, who easily disposed of Greenwich, 4-0, led once again by Andrew Griffith who scored his fifth goal of the tournament. Staffhawks and Toronto will square off in a crucial round-robin game tomorrow at 12.30 p.m.
The Bermuda National team, coming off an emotional high after holding Staffhawks 0-0 on opening day, needed a late goal from centre-half Mark Ray with less than two minutes left in the game to tie Greenwich 1-1 and stay in contention. Greenwich looked almost certain to grab a 1-0 victory and coasted during most of the second half leaving Bermuda tired and frustrated.
Suddenly, Bermuda captain Ifor Hughes went down the left wing for a breakaway, then tapped the ball to a charging Ray who slapped it beyond the Greenwich goalkeeper.
"It was really a case of us not scoring, rather than Greenwich putting up a real strong defence,'' said David Mocklow, starting right-half for Bermuda.
Scoring goals has not been a problem for the women's team bearing Mocklow's surname as the Magic have served notice they plan to keep the title they have secured for two consecutive festivals.
Jennifer Kinnear of Ottawa, Canada, notched the first goal -- her second of the the tournament -- for Mocklow's yesterday and credits excellent communication on the pitch for her team's superior play to date.
"There's a lot of hustle out there and we're really determined,'' said Kinnear, who is in Bermuda for the sixth time. "Most of this team hasn't played together before but we've really clicked. Our passes have been good and quick. We've also been conscious of the heat and we've been drinking lots of fluids.'' The heat has been on Bermuda's Under-21 squad who led off the tournament with a 2-1 victory but have been forced off the scoresheet since. Bermuda's Flashy Forties finally scored their first triumph of the tournament over the Under-21s but have a difficult task facing them with games against BSC Young Boys and Bermuda's CAC Squad tomorrow.
Hockey will not be part of the Festival programme today with players scheduled for a day of golf at Riddell's Bay.
SLICK STICKHANDLING -- Lisa DeSilva, centre, of the Bermuda CAC Squad was an awesome presence on the National Sports Club pitch yesterday afternoon helping her team by scoring two goals in a 10-0 demolition of Pingree School. Earlier in the day, DeSilva scored the only goal as CAC blanked Babson College 1-0.
