Maine, school has a rich history of top Bermudian athletes, the latest being
season.
The Terriers co-captain was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Northeast team. Russell, who was selected to the first team, also received honourable mention to the 1997 NAIA women's soccer All-America team after a season in which she scored 11 goals and set up nine others.
Russell, a junior midfielder, had already been named to the NAIA women's soccer All-America Scholar-Athlete team. She holds a 3.53 grade point average in sports management.
The Terriers finished the season in fifth place with a 5-6 conference record, missing the play-offs. But that was through no fault of Russell, who led the Maine Athletic Conference and was selected to the first all-star team in her third year as a starter. "She just knows the game very, very well,'' coach Kelly Smith said in an interview. "She sees the entire field and is great with the ball.'' Smith said Russell was an unselfish player -- almost to fault. "She was passing up scoring opportunities so I had to sit down with her and say, `You've to start shooting more','' Smith laughed.
Russell responded, scoring four goals in the next game.
She is also in her third year on the varsity basketball team, whose season started almost immediately after the soccer campaign ended.
Smith recruited Russell after watching her play in the Bermuda Football Association All-Star game. She attends Thomas on a Cindy Simmons Scholarship, awarded to top Bermudian athletes. In addition to Russell, three other Bermudians playing soccer at Thomas. Smith said she would be on the Island next month for another recruiting trip.
