Malcolm blows away laser fleet

sailors as he cruised away with the top prize following the Laser National Championships in the Great Sound on Sunday.

Five wins from six races enabled the crafty Smith to easily outdistance second-place finisher Brett Wright.

With one race score dropped, Smith recorded a score of three-and-three-quarter points compared to 15 for Wright.

However, despite the wide margin, racing was indeed keen as the aforementioned duo along with Adam Barboza (16 points) and Peter Bromby (19 points) hooked up in several intriguing and close duels.

Smith surrendered his chance at a perfect regatta when he and Barboza succumbed to the elements -- winds were gusting upwards of 20 knots -- during the fifth race and capsized near the jibe mark.

This resulted in Douglas DeCouto (213 points) taking advantage for his solitary win as he just edged Jamie Harvey (38 points) into second place.

Saturday saw five races sailed in four classes as the Bank of Butterfield Grand Prix continued with the second Youth Sailing Regatta being held in Hamilton Harbour.

Optimist, Laser, Laser II and Enterprise all saw action in a mixture of light winds and rain.

Douglas DeCouto emerged as the top gun in the Laser class as he held off stern challenges from Jesse DeCouto and Somers Kempe.

Decouto recorded a winnning total of three points compared to eight and three-quarters and nine for DeCouto and Kempe repectively.

Among the Laser IIs it was Patrick Singleton skippering his way to first overall with help from John Singleton, notching five-and-a-half points to edge the team of Cort Crane and Mathew MacDonald by a single point.

Meanwhile, Otis Simons and Kevin DeCosta continued their winning ways in seizing the Enterprise title ahead of Dawit Masters and Leonard Astwood.

Four-and-a-half points was their score as they swept to victory.

Leading Optimist sailor was Travis Burland, garnering three points followed by Andrew Henderson (111 ) and A.J. Crane (15).

The next event in the series is scheduled for Saturday at Mangrove Bay starting at 10 a.m.
