Nine-man Wolves snatch dramatic extra-time win

(after extra time) The full impact of Michael Hansey's 28th minute penalty miss wasn't felt until referee George O'Brien's final whistle at Somerset last night signalled Wolves' first appearance in a Martonmere Cup final.

The way Wolves and their fans celebrated afterwards one would have thought they had already won the cup. The smiles, hugs and kisses were as much for reaching the final as they were for the manner in which they accomplished it...with nine men! Certainly the odds didn't favour Wolves when they went into extra-time two men short following the dismissals of college student Khari Sharrieff in the 62nd minute and captain Anthony Thomas in the 82nd, both for second cautions.

But it was Wolves who, after two hours of total commitment, got their just reward six minutes into the second period of extra-time when former Village player Nakia Smith finally broke the deadlock.

Wolves were awarded a free kick on the left side and Tori Davis found Smith at the near post to score with a neat glancing header.

With nine agonising minutes still to go, Wolves dug deeper into their pockets of determination as Village threw caution to the wind in an attempt to pull back the goal, pushing players forward in numbers.

Another Wolves goal almost came in the closing seconds of the match when substitute Jared Peniston was put free of the Village defence by a perfect pass. His intended lob over Zane Hendrickson was blocked by the 'keeper before Peniston got a second chance, but this time he put the rebound wide with his left foot.

Village knew they had blown a good opportunity to win this match, as a combination of poor finishing and important saves by Cymande Davis in the Wolves goal denied them.

The save that changed the match came near the half hour mark when Kenny Thompson was tripped as he got inside the box. Davis went low to his right to stop Hansey's spot kick.

Wolves' problems began in the next minute when Sharrieff got his first booking and Tori Davis followed four minutes later. Village were stamping their authority as a long range shot from Omar Ray went just inches over the bar.

Village's domination continued in the second half as Sharrieff, brought back for this match, went off in the 62nd minute for fouling. It looked a lost cause for Wolves when key midfielder Thomas followed 20 minutes later for a second caution.

But even with nine men coach Dennis Brown kept urging his young team on and early in injury time when Davis blocked an effort from Elliott Jennings, and then Kenny Thompson shot wide after Frank Brewster miskicked his clearance, it was becoming obvious it was not going to be Village's night.

Nakia Smith made certain of that with his injury time winner.
