Police defaults curtail weekend action

Teachers and Mariners exchanged wins in their divisional encounters over the weekend while matches featuring Police and Renegades failed to get off the ground.

On Saturday, Mariners grabbed first place in the second division, with just one match remaining, after defeating a lacklustre Teachers side 22-12. Greens' skipper Derek Kilcoyne led the charge with a pair of tries.

Meanwhile, in Sunday's only first team game, Teachers trounced a weak Mariners side 65-0 behind a five try effort from left wing Heath Robinson and a hat-trick from right wing Kevin Harris.

In the weekend's other scheduled games, featuring Police and Renegades, the boys in blue were unable to muster enough players to meet their opposition in either encounter and ended up handing over all the points.

But Teachers more than compensated for the lack of a second game on Sunday with a venerable try-feast, despite the slippery conditions.

Teachers' pack controlled much of the play and distributed plenty of ball to their back line who capitalised fully against their weaker opposition.

Mariners failed to get their offence in gear and the result was that they seldom threatened their opposition's line as Teachers attacked from all parts of the pitch.

Besides the wings' scores, scrum half Andrew Correia, number eight Noel Capewell and fly half Ross Webber notched up a try apiece.

Webber also added a conversion, centre Nathan Browne kicked three more and lock Dennis Cherry rounded out the scoring with another.

But on the previous day -- which was hot and dry in comparison -- the tables were turned as Mariners came out strongly and put Teachers second team on their back foot from the opening kick-off.

With the Greens' inability to field a proper front row, the referee was forced to abandon contested scrums meaning each side were guaranteed their share of the ball.

Mariners made more use of their possession from the set piece as shown in scrum half Kilcoyne's two tries and a single score from number eight James Sparrow from the back of the scrum.

The Greens also dominated loose play around the field and continual pressure resulted in an Eddie Arandejovic try. Fly half Keith Oliver added a lone conversion.

For Teachers, Nathan Browne scored two tries and a conversion.
