Pros chase increased purse
return to Port Royal today with a total of $21,000 in prizemoney up for grabs.
The event was scrapped last year because the day put aside for the competition had to be used to accommodate the rained out second round of the Goodwill Tournament.
When the championships were last held in 1995 total prizemoney was $18,000, but this year the juniors will battle for $14,000 and the seniors $7,000.
The junior winner will pick up $3,200, with $1,800 going to second place, $1,300 to third and $1,000 to fourth. The senior winner will become $1,900 richer with $1,000 going to the runner-up and $750 to third place.
Chuck Winstead, who won the junior title in 1995 on the third play-off hole over Steve Masden, has not returned this year. Masden, who led the Lakewood Country Club team that year, is also missing as Lakewood are being skippered this time by Dennis Winters.
Some of the top junior finishers from two years ago who will again be competing include Al Sutton (Mendham CC), John Schob (Huntington Crescent) and Colin Campbell (Loch Lomond), all of whom carded 73s. Don Brigham, the 1994 champion, will also be competing.
They will be joined by local professionals Dwayne Pearman (Ocean View), Kim Swan (St. George's), Kevin Benevides (Castle Harbour), Darron Swan (Riddell's Bay) and Cornell Bean of Belmont, none of whom competed in 1995.
The senior local pros aiming to pick up a Christmas bonus are Keith Smith of Southampton Princess, Keith Pearman of Mid Ocean and Port Royal's Frankie Rabain.
Joe Carr of Bedrock CC, no stranger to Bermuda tournaments, will be one of those to beat. He won the 1995 tournament with a round of 73, one more than Steve Spray of St. Louis who is also back this year.
