Renegades, Mariners wrap up league titles

Renegades I and Mariners II walked away from Nationals with league championships following their respective victories over the weekend.

Mariners' second team defeated Renegades 10-0 on Saturday to clinch the second XV title but then had to watch their first team suffer a 34-0 drubbing by Renegades the following afternoon.

Meanwhile, Teachers notched up second place finishes in both divisions with an 81-0 hammering of Police in the first team match-up and a 19-7 win in the second division.

Renegades secured their second league title in a row behind the solid play of their new addition this season, Peter Shillingford, who scored a try and was instrumental in much of Renegades' attack.

Sean Kelly, Alan Mackie, Steve Given, Andrew Trinder and Phil Heaney each notched tries during a dominating display of running rugby.

Heaney was less fortunate with the boot, managing only a pair of conversions.

In Sunday's first game, Teachers romped to their highest points total of the season behind captain Andre Simons, who was returning from injury. Simons ran in three tries and added a conversion.

He was joined on the scoreboard by fly half Ross Webber with two tries and three conversions, fellow wing Heath Robinson with a pair of tries and lock Dennis Cherry with two more.

Team-mates Ashley Redmond, Darryl Bean, Michael Montgomery, and Kevin Harris all scored a try apiece. Harris added a conversion and scrum half Andrew Correia kicked three others.

In Saturday's encounters, Mariners fly half Keith Oliver and centre Andy Godwin each scored tries in the second half of their game to help their side win the league.

Renegades had the chance to snatch victory behind their larger pack of forwards and several penalty kicks near Mariners' posts, but they failed to capitalise.

Teachers ran up all their points in the first half with flankers Dan Bucher and Nir Phillips each scoring tries as did Harris who also kicked two conversions.

Police played better in the second half with wing Troy Glasgow scoring a try which captain Ian Jamieson converted, but it was too late for the boys in blue to erase the deficit.
