Riders fail to show for race finale
decision by Bermuda Auto Cycle Union to bring Sunday's meet forward to Saturday resulted in the absence of several riders.
BACU made the switch in order to allow riders to partake in other Easter Sunday activities. But the entire 60cc class and points leaders from the Pee Wee 50, 125 B, 125 C and 250 classes all failed to show, resulting in a disappointing finish to the programme.
Howard Paynter went into the final round in the 80cc class with a seven point lead over Treadwell Nesbitt who was 13 points ahead of Steven Panchaud. All had a chance of taking the title but Paynter clinched it with a hat-trick of victories, guaranteeing his promotion to the 125 C class next season.
Finishing second was Panchaud with three seconds while Nesbitt had three thirds. However, Nesbitt, second overall on points, will still make the jump up to the 125 C class for the new season.
Ali Hatherley grabbed his first hat-trick in two seasons of racing when he took the day's honours in the 125 C class to finish third overall on points.
Lawrence Noble was second with three seconds and moved up to sixth overall in the standings.
Four-time national champion Aaron Pace notched three wins in the 125 B class but that wasn't enough to threaten the lead of the absent Kemo Simons who led by 105 points going into the weekend races.
Even though Pace missed four race days he still ended the season with one more win (14) than Simons.
On Sunday Pace was challenged by Kyle Constable and Justin Belboda with Constable finishing with two seconds and a third and Belboda two thirds and a second. Belboda moved into third place overall, ahead on points of outgoing champion Robbie Smith who missed several weeks of the season.
The season officially ends this Sunday with the Memorial Fun Day event at Coney Island.
