Smith takes over at St. George's
presidency of St. George's Cricket Club.
Smith, who formerly held the post of secretary and was also on the management committee as well as a selector, was voted in unopposed at last week's annual general meeting after Clevie Foggo declined to run for re-election. Foggo had held the post for five years.
Smith is also president of the Bermuda Table Tennis Association, having helped form the BTTA in 1982.
He began his club involvement in 1949 when he helped found Wellington Rovers and was elected secretary, a position he held until 1983 when Rovers disbanded.
With Cup Match returning to St. George's this year, it will be a busy time for the club. But Smith said he was ready for the challenge, having already identified some issues he wants to tackle.
"To increase membership and to have more functions to involve families,'' said Smith of one of his goals. "We're going to enlarge the entertainment committee to get more involvement from children and their parents.
"Last year the membership was down by 40-odd and therefore general revenue was down. There are going to be functions held pretty regularly to increase revenue and involve families.'' Preparations for the Cup Match Classic will begin in earnest after next Monday's management committee meeting. The club plans to close the field on March 20 for at least five weeks while repair work is carried out.
"We want to have the field in tip-top shape by the time the Australians arrive in May,'' said Smith. The work includes seeding and top soiling.
Two changes were made to the executives at the AGM, with Neil Paynter replacing Freddie Hall as vice president. Returning were Dennis Spencer as secretary, Gregory Foggo as treasurer and Carlos Caisey as assistant secretary.
Cricketers Graham Fox, last year's captain, and Clay Smith joined the management committee. The other new face is Andre Bassett while returning were Thomas Paynter, Gregory Smith and Allan Caisey.
The selection committee was appointed on Monday night and includes Gladwin Peniston as chairman, Allan Caisey, Randy King and Louis DeSilva. The fifth member will be the captain who is to be appointed next week. Graham Fox is expected to return for a second year as skipper.
The two club representatives to the Bermuda Football Association are Spencer and Caisey while the representatives to the Bermuda Cricket Board of Control are Gregory Foggo and Wendell Smith.
Smith is currently at school abroad and in the meantime Mansfield Smith will fill his place.
