Somerset, Boulevard in race for first title

silverware when they clash in a battle of giants tonight as the 1993-94 soccer season gets under way with the Charity Cup being the featured attraction at Somerset Cricket Club (8 p.m.).

The match, pitting the reigning league champion Trojans against the Blazers, holders of the FA Cup, is expected to draw a legion of spectators, no doubt anxious for their first taste of soccer action.

The match is annually a big draw with much of the proceeds donated to charity, hence the name of the competition.

Interestingly, this will mark the third consecutive time Boulevard have appeared in the season curtain-raiser. However, it has not proven a happy stomping ground for them, with losses to PHC in both 1991 and 1992.

While Somerset stood relatively idle during the transfer period and return virtually the same nucleus, the Blazers were busy shoring up their guard with the addition of several proven senior players.

Clinton and Albert Caisey have been brought in along with goalkeeper Lynn Tucker, and the pair of Shivaughn Smith and Stevie Wade may also prove useful additions.

For the west-enders, they enter tonight's match without former skipper and defensive stalwart Dennis Brown, who was lured to Vasco. Meanwhile, livewire winger Jerry Webb has returned to school overseas and midfield dynamo Reggie Tucker has also been conspicuous by his absence from training sessions.

The Hotels trio of Chris Sabir, Clifton Anderson and Gladwin Edness have returned home to their roots and it is likely that two of the three will see action tonight.

Nevertheless, both sides should be able to formulate effective line-ups and it may come down to which side are able to get over the initial adrenalin rush and settle into a consistent method of play.
