Somerset's Jones hammers first ton of the season

Somerset CC 270-4 Hamilton Parish 213-7 A dashing ton from the bat of Somerset's Reid Jones gave him the distinction of becoming the first century-maker of the season on Saturday in a First Division match against Hamilton Parish at Sea Breeze Oval.

But his fine innings of 144 not out still wasn't sufficient to prevent home side Hamilton Parish holding on for a draw, thanks to half centuries from Curtis Lee and Phillip Bailey.

Jones took full advantage of ordinary bowling and the small confines of Sea Breeze by slamming 17 fours and four sixes. He and Steval Mendes (42) gave the visitors an early edge by putting on 101 for the opening stand.

Others among the runs were Derek Herbert with 39, C.Cox 24 and Troy Symonds 16. Shane Burgess led the Parish bowlers with three for 52 while Chris Caisey had two for 38.

IYT 79 Flatts 80-2 James Thomas snatched four for 22 and Shaun Woolridge struck 58 to lead Flatts to an eight wicket victory over the International Youth Team at Devonshire Rec.

Others among the wickets for Flatts were Kevin Hurdle with two for 16 and Gordie Hollis with two for 17.

Joya Millett was top scorer for the youngsters with 18 while Azeem Pitcher followed with 17 and Ricardo Brangman 12.

Social Club 124 Somerset Bridge 126-4 Despite an opening stand of 67 between Thomas Brangman (32) and Gladwin Richardson (26), Social Club could only manage 124 against Somerset before crashing to a six wicket defeat at Nationals.

The openers gave them an ideal start but few other batsmen followed their lead as Bridge were able to penetrate the Social Club batting after the breakthrough. Captain Webster Mills managed 16 and tailender Elvis Richardson Sr. 18 as nine wickets went down for 50 runs.

Leading the Bridge bowling was Eugene Johnston with six for 35 from 10.5 overs and David Jones with three for 22 from nine.

Captain O'Neil Virgil was high man for Bridge with 25 not out, after Paul Joell (22) and Scott Robinson (7) put on 64 for the first wicket, most of the runs coming through extras as Social Club conceded a total of 40 in the Bridge innings. Leonard Richardson claimed two for 30 from nine overs.

Warwick scored 228 and Cleveland replied with 150-5 in a drawn match at Southampton Oval.

SUNDAY Flatts 285-4 Hamilton Parish 144-5 Gershon Gibbons hit a century and Aaron Woolridge struck 45 but these two good batting displays could not lead Flatts to victory at Sea Breeze Oval as Hamilton Parish hung on for a draw.

Gibbons finished with 128 not out, striking 12 fours during his marathon stay at the crease which began at 11.30 and ended with the declaration at 3.50.

Also among the runs were Troy Dean with 38 and Andrew Richardson with 32.

Mike Burgess led the Parish bowlers with two for 42. Parish made a positive reply with Dennis Trott leading the way with 49.

David Scraders made 42 and Ray Trott 18 not out. Scraders, the former Commercial League player, was particularly brutal against national squad bowler Hurdle, slamming him for 16 off one over.

Hurdle finished the day with no wickets while conceding 60 runs from 12 overs.

But team-mates Troy Dean and Jason Thomas were more successful, Dean finishing with three for 16 and Thomas with two for 15.

IYT 97 Warwick 98-3 Warwick defeated the International Youth Team by seven wickets at Southampton Oval on Sunday, thanks to the bowling of Daniel Caines, Dimitri Tucker and Hoyt Zuill who combined to snatch seven wickets.

Zuill finished with three for 20, Caines two for 24 and Tucker two for 36 in a game that saw only two youth team batsmen reach double figures. Quincy Burgess struck 25 and Ricardo Brangman 12.

Jeffrey James led Warwick in reply with 38 not out while Daniel Morgan scored 32 not out and Quinton King 11.

Monroe Darrell took two wickets for 35 runs while Davon Govia had one for seven.

Somerset 137 Social Club 139-7 Social Club bounced back from their opening day loss to Somerset Bridge, by beating Somerset by three wickets at Nationals.

Somerset were restricted to just 137 after Cecil Tucker, Antoine Russell and Leonard Richardson enjoyed success with the ball for Social Club. Tucker finished with four for 33 from 13 overs while his new ball partner, Russell, claimed three for 44 and first-change Richardson two for 23 from nine overs.

High man for Somerset was tailender Kenneth Maybury with 25 not out -- he added 35 for the last wicket with Galen Richardson (14) -- while Sidney Simmons scored 22 and number three bat Gladwin Ingham 21.

Despite 49 from captain and opener Webster Mills, Social Club were in some early trouble as Gladwin Richardson, Shawn Spencer and Cory Berkeley all went cheaply before another veteran Cecil Tucker steadied the ship with 60 not out to assure victory. Maybury again carried the fight for Somerset, taking four for 22 from 18 overs which yielded 13 maidens while Steven Mendes claimed two for 55.

Devonshire 280 Cleveland 180-8 Donald Norford scored 138 not out and captain Anthony Amory 82, but Devonshire Rec. finished without a win on the opening weekend as Cleveland hung on for a draw.
