Star rider joins Island trio
cyclists at a prestigious race in Canada tomorrow.
Longeau, who is to female cycling what Greg Lemond is to the male sport, will join Melanie Claude, Julia Hawley and Jeanna Godfrey for the 2000 Grand Prix Feminin International du Quebec which runs until Sunday.
Last year Claude competed in the event as guest of the US national team and completed the five-day, six-stage course in 15th place.
Longeau will join the Bermuda national team for this year's event wearing her French National Champion jersey.
Team director, Paul Claude said: "At 43 years of age Longeau is a cycling legend and with her multiple world titles in hand, the defending Olympic champion is still one of the most feared and respected cyclists in the world.
"The three Bermudian riders are extremely excited at the prospect of teaming up with Longeau and they are hoping to gain valuable experience from her.'' Claude and Hawley are both fresh from taking part in separate multi-stage events and are optimistic about their chances in Canada.
But they know they will have to be on top of their game if they are to snatch any glory as strong teams from the home nation, the USA and Great Britain will also be riding.
The Grand Prix consists of six stages beginning in Farnham, Quebec, with a 97 kilometre road race. There then follows a 123K road race, 99K road race, 18K time trial, 40K criterium and a final 90K road race ending at the top of Mount Sutton.
