Stars regain top spot

Cleveland 124 Albert Steede hammered 67 and Gary Brangman claimed five wickets for 58 off 10 overs to inspire Western Stars to a 168-run victory over Cleveland at St.

John's field and regain top spot in the Premier Division Overs title race with one match to go.

With Steede and his team-mates in solid batting form, Stars were never in any difficulty once openers Gregory Sampson and Treadwell Gibbons got them off to a decent start by putting on 42, Sampson hitting 34 and Gibbons 27.

Other making contributions in addition to Steede were Cleon Scotland with 39, Anthony Manders 20 and Gary Brangman 19. Jermaine Postlethwaite was the leading bowlers for Cleveland with three for 37 while Merkal Smith had two for 33 and Andre Smith two for 55.

Thanks to Brangman, Stars required just 25 overs to dismiss their opponents for whom veteran Allan Douglas was outstanding with a score of 57.

Postlethwaite followed with 18 and Courtney Trott 13.

Cleveland lost openers Carlton Smith (10) and skipper Aaron Adams (5) with 20 runs scored and were in great trouble when Jason Simons (0) was dismissed to make it 25-3. Postlethwaite and Douglas added stability with a fourth-wicket stand of 49, but once that ended it was only a matter of time before the bowlers ripped through the remainder of the order.

Bowlers taking wickets in addition to Brangman were Hasan Durham with two for five, Arnold Manders two for 11 and Earlston Wolffe one for 41 Willow Cuts 310 Nationals 128 Skipper Dexter Basden struck 94 to lead Willow Cuts to a 182-run victory over Nationals at Wellington Oval.

Also among the runs for Cuts were Jermaine Warner with 54, Dwight Basden with 39 and Gladwin Edness 25.

Dennis Trott hit 54 in reply for eight-man Nationals but too many of their remaining batsmen failed.

The match between St. David's and Police at St. David's was not played because umpires showed up.
