Steede's effort not quite enough

Western Stars 159-2 A brisk 85 not out by top batsman Albert Steede combined with some good bowling by skipper Arnold Manders, Hasan Durham and Cleon Scotland gave Western Stars victory and maximum points in this game at St. John's field.

But despite winning, their hopes of remaining in the title race floundered as Southampton beat St David's, leaving Stars to settle for second place.

Chasing a target of 159, Stars breezed to victory off 28 overs.

Steede persevered after losing Jermaine Postlethwaite (2) and Treadwell Gibbons (4), putting on 125 in a third-wicket stand with Ricky Brangman who was 47 not out. Steede struck 11 fours and a six.

Derek Wright finished with two for 29 off seven overs with one maiden.

Flatts had made a good start with Andrew Richardson and Wright putting on 50 for the first wicket. Richardson scored 19 and Wright 29.

Once the breakthrough occurred the Stars' bowling attack was allowed to get on top and restrict the remaining batsmen.

Manders finished with three for 46 from 10 overs, Durham two for 23 from 10 overs and Scotland two for 41 from 10 overs.

St. George's 241 Cleveland 137 Mark Ray struck 57 and Gregg Foggo took four for 22 to lead St. George's to this 104-run victory at Wellington Oval.

Shoron Hunt kept victory in sight for PHC when he scored 21 not out, as a ninth wicket stand took them from 184 to 209. Going into the last over PHC still needed four runs to win. PHC had a bad start when Devonshire had them 55-4 before a fifth wicket stand of 110 between Cal Waldron (41) and Kevin Dill (65) raised their hopes.
