Striker Warren sparks Blazers

A three-goal blitz within 12 minutes of the second half killed off an ambitious Devonshire Cougars side in this FA Cup third round clash at Devonshire Rec. last night.

Champions Boulevard were made to sweat it out against Cougars who matched them for most of the opening half. But after the break the challenge by the home side simply faded.

Boulevard were in high spirits at the final whistle, having paid back Cougars for the humiliating 4-1 defeat just three weeks' ago in a First Division clash at the same venue.

The mastermind of Boulevard's recovery was Dwight Warren who along with Stevie Wade missed a number of chances in the first half.

Warren scored the first two goals in the 52nd and 54th minutes while Vernon Eve made it 3-0 after 57 minutes and Gerald Georges scored an own goal after 71 minutes.

The game was marred by the dismissals of two players with Wade being sent off by referee Richard Knight for retaliating with a blow to the face of Steve Coddington after 63 minutes and then substitute Ryan Swan of Cougars was red carded for the apparent use of foul language during a stoppage of play.

Boulevard endured a frustrating start when striker Rodney Bascome made a mess of a Warren cross, his shot dribbling towards goal before being cleared.

That was the trend of play for Boulevard for 20 minutes as chance after chance was wasted with Warren, Wade and Bascome the main culprits.

Cougars, inspired by hard-working skipper Wali Salaam in midfield, fought back courageously and matched their opponents for the rest of the half but their goal-scoring chances were few and far between.

Their best opportunity came after 25 minutes when forward Clevie Campbell's fierce drive from 18 yards forced goalkeeper Mitchell Steede to dive to the ground and make a good save.

Boulevard took a decisive edge early in the second half when centre-back Leroy Stevens started a move in his own half near the centre line and sent a ball into the middle of the Cougars' defence where Bascome tapped into the path of the grateful Warren who blasted home from 12 yards.

Then two minutes later Warren coolly controlled a corner kick by skipper Neil Robinson and thundered home a half-volley from just inside the box to put Boulevard two goals up.

Cougars were completely floored three minutes later when Eve finished off by blasting a goal from 16 yards out.

In counter attacks Campbell put two shots wide for Cougars before the own goal made it 4-0 for Boulevard.

Wolves 1 Somerset 0 Former FA Cup winners Somerset Trojans crashed out of the competition last night in the opening match at Devonshire Rec. when a goal after just 80 seconds by winger Clevon Hill proved to be enough to carry Wolves into the quarter-finals.

This match between two Second Division teams was keenly contested as both sides carried on from where they left off in their league meeting in October when Wolves led 2-0 only to see Somerset battle back to draw 2-2.

One of Somerset's best chances to equalise in the first half came in the 35th minute when a volley from Richard Scott from outside the box dropped just over the bar.

Wolves had Jomar Wilkinson carried off and taken to hospital with a knee injury late in the half, with Nathan Webb filling in as substitute.

The Trojans, who have won the FA Cup nine times, stepped up the pressure in the second half in search of the equaliser. However, they could find no way through a Wolves defence which was well marshalled by veteran Kurt Douglas, filling in for for the absent John Barry Nusum and Joey Rego.

The game threatened to get out of hand briefly as tempers started to flare. At the centre of it was a running battle between Webb and Trojans defender Duane DeRosa.

Hewvonnie Brown in the Wolves goal kept out a curling free kick from Musceo Hunt on the right side of the penalty area and then in the closing minutes Khari Sharrieff almost put the match out of Somerset's reach when a well struck volley from inside the box whistled past a post.

YMSC 1 Hotels 4 This FA Cup third round clash started early -- and Social Club never woke up.

Second Division leaders Hotels scored twice in the first five minutes and led 4-0 at the half en route to a quarter final date.

With no game preceding it and no fans to be inconvenienced, officials, with the agreement of both teams, started the match 10 minutes early. But Social Club would have been better off staying in the dresing room.

Hotels' short-passing posession game had a field day against a lead-footed defence which seemeed to rely solely on offside traps.

Ricky Hill scored after just four minutes and Joseph Weekes made it 2-0 a minute later. Both goals came as a result of breakdowns in Social Club's back four.

Coolridge Bell gave the Bluebirds brief hope in the 10th minute but his team were too badly outgunned for the goal to be taken seriously.

Hill scored again in the 20th minute, ramming in a rebound after a Garon Smith shot.

The third member of Hotels' dangerous trio, Dennis Robinson, completed the scoring in the 40th minute. He too was allowed to walk into the area, beating the 'keeper with a shot into the bottom left hand corner from 10 yards.

Social Club's offside trap had better success in the second half but did little to thwart Hotels' pressure as YMSC spent too much time bickering among themselves.
