Struggling Cougars smashed for six

Hit-man Darron (Duke) Simons helped himself to four goals as bottom team Devonshire Cougars were sent crashing to their second heavy defeat in five days last night at the Rec.

And already Cougars are looking strong relegation candidates after conceding 11 goals in their last two games to remain anchored at the bottom of the standings, still without a win.

They had a promising start, creating three scoring chances in the first 10 minutes as Town were slow to settle down. Aljame Zuill, one of their summer signings, had a first time shot smothered by 'keeper Antoine Lightbourne and then Raynel Lightbourne, formerly of PHC, put a first time shot inches over the bar.

Captain Wali Salaam had an equally good chance in the 10th minute when 'keeper Lightbourne dropped a cross, but Salaam could only put a weak shot straight back at a relieved Lightbourne.

Goals win matches and Town took their first big step towards their biggest win of the season when sharp-shooter Simons pounced to score from a rebound after Pernell Douglas' shot from outside the box rebounded off the legs of 'keeper Tori Henry.

Henry made a one-handed save to deny Reggie Tucker minutes later as Town took control. Cougars were fortunately to keep it at 1-0 at the half.

But things went drastically wrong for the home team after the restart as Town scored three times in 11 minutes to blow this match wide open. After Reggie Tucker's header grazed the top of the crossbar in the first minute of the second half, the gates opened to allow Town easy passage.

The second goal came in the 49th minute when the ball reached Kris Martin inside the box and he planted a low crisp shot into the near bottom corner.

Midfielder Devarr Boyles hit a low curling left-foot shot into the far bottom corner from the right side of the box to make it 3-0 in the 59th minute and a minute later Simons slipped into the box and toe-poked the ball past the advancing Henry.

Cougars made three substitutions in the space of three minutes in a bid to stem the tide as Galvin Butterfield went off with a groin injury. But there was no stopping Town as Simons completed his hat-trick in the 70th minute when he met a cross from Boyles on the right and scored with a simple header.

Calls from the Town fans for a six-pack was answered 10 minutes from time when Simons scored from the penalty spot after substitute Mark Trott (not the Town coach) was pulled back in the penalty area by Shawn Smith.

Wolves 2 St. David's 1 Wolves continued their unbeaten run at the top of the Second Division when they made it five straight wins in the opening contest. Wolves built up a 2-0 lead with late first half goals from Joey Rego in the 37th minute and Nirobi Smith in the 43rd. A penalty miss early in the second half by John Barry Nusum, which hit the crossbar, kept St. David's in the game and they pulled one back on the hour when Rudell Pitcher scored from close range.
