Teachers hand Mariners double KO
Mariners teams out of end-of-season tournaments.
On Sunday, the Reds' first team secured a place in next Sunday's Nichol Shield final with a hard fought 18-17 win over the Greens.
A day earlier Teachers' second fifteen crushed the second division league winners 32-5 to earn a place in the finals of the Robin Hood Cup competition.
They will face the Police second team who defeated Renegades 30-20 in Saturday's other match.
Teachers' opponents in the Nichol Shield will be Renegades who earned their spot with a default win over Police who were unable to field a team.
But Sunday's sole encounter provided enough drama for the die-hard spectators.
Greens leapt out to an early lead with a Keith Hodgkins' penalty kick but Reds pulled it straight back with Ross Webber's penalty.
Teachers enjoyed most of the territorial advantage through the early stages of the game but were hampered by the loss of Dennis Cherry, Dave Beau and Andrew Correia to injury.
However, their forwards continued to exert pressure and finally wore down the Greens' defence to allow youngster Nathan Browne to dart in and notch the side's first try. Webber converted the score and added another penalty shortly before the half.
After the interval, Mariners came out fighting with their forwards taking control.
But it was Webber who drew first blood with a try after he linked up with Alvin Harvey who had taken the ball deep into Mariners' 22.
The Greens maintained their composure and began to claw their way back into the game. Teachers were forced onto their back foot but were powerless in their efforts to stop Ken Anderson from scoring a well earned try after wing Rob Morgan had outstripped Reds' covering defence. Hodgkins converted the score.
Teachers tried to reassert themselves but their frustration grew more and more apparent after Mariners were able to hold them during a ten minute stretch of intense pressure.
Mariners changed the direction of play and drove deep into the Reds' 22 where successive penalties allowed lock Pat Pomeroy the chance to drive over the line from close range.
Hodgkins converted to pull his side to within one point but Teachers were saved by the final whistle shortly after.
