Teachers, Renegades turn up the heat

Teachers I 50 Police I 3 Teachers crushed a short-handed Police side behind speedster Heath Robinson's four tries in first team rugby action at Nationals on Sunday.

Just minutes into the game, Teachers centre Andrew Mackay opened the scoring with an individual try which was converted by fly half Ross Webber.

And although Police scrum half Greg Lunn replied with a penalty kick, those were to prove the Blues' only points of the day.

Teachers launched an all-out assault on the Police goal-line with Robinson as their point man. The flying wing scored two tries in quick succession, one of which Webber converted.

After the half, the onslaught continued with centre Nathan Browne adding a try of his own which Webber converted. But then it was Robinson again who notched his hat-trick after taking a pass from lock Ashley Redmond. He then added a fourth try with an individual effort.

Teachers' pack got into the act with a try from flanker Dave Beau following strong runs by number eight Noel Capewell and flanker Dennis Cherry.

Montgomery converted this score and Browne converted the final try of the day which was scored by Webber.

Mariners I 0 Renegades I 64 Mariners suffered much the same as Police as they were hammered by a well drilled Renegades outfit.

'Gades dominated every facet of the game and repeatedly cashed in on their opponents' errors.

They jumped on the scoreboard early with a try from wing Sean Kelly which was followed by a try from captain Mike Gorrie whose weaving run left the defence reeling.

Fly half Phil Heaney converted this score and the next pair of tries which came from scrum half Steve Given and lock Rod Forrest.

Kelly added a second try when Mariners failed to clear the ball near their own line.

Flanker Rod Stewart scored after Mariners fumbled on their own try line again and Shandy Purewal added another just before the interval after a break by Gorrie put the flanker clear.

Heaney converted these scores to make it 45-0 at the half.

Mariners stemmed the flow somewhat in the second half but eventually broke down as Stewart romped in for his second try of the day. Purewal followed soon after with his second try after Renegades had withstood a period of Mariners pressure before countering with a fast paced back line move. Heaney converted this and the final score which came from centre Peter Shillingford.

Teachers II 12 Police II 12 In second team action, Teachers fought back to earn a share of the spoils after a poor start which saw them trail by 12 points.

Police wing Troy Glasgow scored two tries and Ian Jamieson added a conversion.

Teachers' flanker Dan Bucher scored a try back before the half which Patrick McHugh converted and prop Freedom Burrows bulldozed over after the interval to even things up.

Mariners II 17 Renegades II 0 Mariners' second team avenged their first team's loss with this 17 point drubbing of Renegades.

Hard running centre Andy Godwin scored a pair of tries and fly half Keith Oliver added a third. Derek Kilcoyne kicked a lone conversion.
