Ten-man Town battle back in six-goal thriller
Ten-man Dandy Town battled back from behind to deny Wolves victory in a six-goal Premier Division thriller at Devonshire Rec. last night.
Wolves had led 3-1 at half-time and were still 3-2 up when Town defender Sean Smith got his marching orders for a foul on Torry Davis in the 62nd minute.
But Town played their best football of the night while a man short and deservedly equalised 14 minutes from time when Heys Wolfe scored direct from a left-footed, inswinging corner.
Wolves will feel they should have bagged their second league win of the season after racing into a 2-0 lead inside the first 17 minutes in this rehearsal of next month's Martonmere Cup final.
Nakia Smith notched the opening goal in the 11th minute, sliding in at the far post to volley home Leonard Hypolite's right-wing corner which had somehow cleared all the heads in a crowded penalty area.
Hypolite, who was Wolves' driving force in midfield, claimed the second himself six minutes later, running onto a glorious pass by Nathan Webb to toe-poke the ball past advancing Town keeper Jason Smith.
Town had their fair share of chances in the first half, but struggled to find a way past Wolves keeper Cymande Davis. In the 10th minute, Davis hung onto Reggie Tucker's shot at his near post after a good move involving Kwame Steede and Kevin Hurdle and four minutes later he pulled off a brilliant save, diving bravely at the feet of Darron Simons to deny Town again.
Town finally pulled one back on the half hour, when Simons' shot rolled along the crossbar and came back off the far post to Tucker whose side-footed shot was cleared, but not before it had crossed the line according to assistant referee Lyndon Raynor.
First half injury time brought more drama, as Davis lunged acrobatically to beat away a fierce left-footed volley by Simons and seconds later, Wolves hit back on the counter attack to extend their lead.
Webb jumped for a high cross from the right with Sean Smith and Jason Smith and the ball fell kindly for Ellington Weldon, who kept his cool to drive a low shot into the net and give Wolves a 3-1 half-time lead.
Town attacked in waves right from the start of the second period and five minutes after the restart they pulled a goal back, when Tucker crossed from the right and Simons fired in from close range.
Wolves hit back with a fine move three minutes later, which ended with Weldon's 20-yard curler being tipped over by Jason Smith.
But that was Wolves' last serious goal-scoring attempt of the match, as Town upped the tempo and dominated from then on.
Sean Smith's somewhat unfortunate dismissal -- because of the speed Torry Davis was travelling the trip looked worse than it probably was -- only served to spur on Town.
But it was not until the 76th minute that they levelled the score, when Wolfe's curling corner dipped between Davis and the defender on the post. It was no fluke -- Wolfe had hit the bar with an earlier corner.
