SAILING SLG The Bermuda crew of Derek Ratteray, Kevin Blee and Ben Cesare grabbed a third place finish after three races in the Etchells 22 Long Island Sound Championships at the weekend.

Defending champion Dennis Connor reeled off a pair of exciting first place finishes in the first two events, which featured a competitive fleet of 23 sailors, while John Kenerson of Virginia Beach, Virginia landed in second place.

Sailing in a borrowed boat, Rangoon , the Bermuda trio got off to a slow start, managing only a tenth place finish in the first race but moved up to fourth place after the second event. The racers blamed the poor finish in the first race to a dismal start and a ripped spinnaker in the second run.

The wind was a factor in the third race and the Rangoon crew found their form, beating America's Cup veteran Connor, who managed a seventh place finish after a late start.

Overall, Kenerson won the day with Connor finishing in second place.

The second day's racing was postponed because of a lack of wind. The regatta was subsequently reduced to a three-race event from the first day.

Final results: (Using an Olympic scoring system) 1. John Kenerson, 11.7 points; 2. Dennis Connor, 14 points; 3. Derek Ratteray, 24 points ; 4. Brian Kelley, 25.4 points.
