RUGBY RUG Renegades took advantage of Mariners' inability to perform for the full 80 minutes during the third week of play in the Bermuda Rugby League on Sunday at Nationals.

Ahead 11-3 with 20 minutes left, Mariners handed the game over to the league leaders, who ended up with a comfortable 24-11 triumph. A first-half try from Dennis Faries and penalties from Keith Hodgkins were enough to hold off a Phil Heaney penalty. The match seemed to be fairly settled when a series of forward confrontations disrupted play after 10 minutes into the second half, leading to the sending off of Rod Forrest of Renegades and Mariners Paul Reid just before full time.

With 20 minutes to go Des Nash powered over for the Renegades recovery try.

Phil Heaney converted and then made a nice break to send Mike Hughes over under the posts. Heaney converted and with the game almost over Rod Stewart ran under the posts for the last score. Heaney converted to seal Mariners fate.

In the day's other game, Teachers, buoyed by the return of winger Heath Robinson, beat Police 34-7.

Tries from Craig McIntyre and powerhouse Patrick Cooper left them 17 points ahead at the turnaround. In the last last 20 minutes, Teachers piled it on again with tries from Alvin Harvey (two) and Noel Capewell. Mike Montgomery added the other points.

Police skipper Dave Bird powered his way over for a fine solo effort which Dave Allen converted to put his team on the scoresheet.

Robinson, coming back after a long injury lay-off, had some fine breaks for Teachers, narrowly failing to score on at least three occasions.

In Saturday's Seconds matches, Police edged Teachers 12-10 and Mariners toppled Renegades 27-10. Both matches saw the teams playing under strength, clearly the results of a tough World Cup campaign.
