. . . . . . . . Then hints at retirement next season

both Noel Gibbons of St. George's and Somerset's captain Perry Maybury possibly having made their final appearances in the classic.

However, while work commitments may force prison officer Maybury out it seems that age may have finally caught up with Gibbons, who this year had another unproductive year in both the batting and bowling departments.

"I'm very skeptical about next year, because my whole job description is changing with us going into the new prison and right now my thought is that I am not going to have the time,'' said Maybury who works at Casemates. "I really don't foresee myself having the time to put into it next year.

"I spoke to these guys (Somerset team) in the changing room and I said to them that it's been a pleasure playing with them and I hope that the rest of their careers would be a long one, but more than likely the captaincy is out.'' Between them the pair have spent 30 years participating in Cup Match, with Gibbons a 23 year veteran and Maybury having played seven times, four as skipper.

Gibbons amassed just 18 runs on yesterday -- lowest among St. George's batsmen -- and could only manage one wicket at a cost of 52 runs from 18 overs, being utilized late in Somerset's second innings by skipper Graham Fox.

Even his selection this year was in doubt along with other veterans Arnold Manders and Clevie Wade, who was dropped.

Still the Bailey's Bay allrounder was able to move past Alma Hunt to fourth on the list of highest aggregates with a total of 776 runs to his credit.

Arnold Manders will change his hat and combine with Somerset's Western Stars players to try to halt St. George's in their push for the league championship tomorrow at Wellington Oval when league action resumes.

This match will have a strong bearing on the outcome of the championship race as St. George's presently hold a two point lead over Western Stars, having remained unbeaten so far.

Each side had seven players involved in the classic and they will have had their energy levels greatly diminished by a tortuous two days in unrelenting sunshine.

Arnold Manders and Cleon Scotland will change hats from the blue of the east to the green and red of Stars, while the remainder -- Allan Brangman, Wayne and Jeff Richardson and Andre and Anthony Manders -- also return to Western Stars for the important clash.

St. George's, who knocked Stars out of the Knockout Cup recently, are looking to stay top of the tables.
