Tournament misery continues as youth team suffer fifth loss

Bermuda's youth cricket team have stretched their losing streak to five matches in the International Youth Tournament in Holland, and have just one final chance today against second-placed Denmark to pick up a victory.

On Thursday, Bermuda went down to Ireland by six wickets. Batting first for the first time, Bermuda scored 111 as Kwame Tucker scored 26, captain Sammy Robinson 25 and Desmond Crockwell 16.

Yesterday, it was loss number five for the disappointed local youngsters, even though they managed to post their highest total so far, 159 all out. That was due to some determined batting in the lower order, as they went down by 89 runs to Canada.

Canada scored 248-9 in their 50 overs as Quinton Sherlock claimed two for 61, Kevin Hurdle two for 40 and Shaun Wade two for 35. Fears of falling to their lowest score in this year's tournament must have been circulating in the Bermuda team as Canada had them 30-6 before middle and late order batsmen Kwame Tucker, Justin Robinson and Daniel Caines made valuable contributions to reduce the margin of victory.

Robinson, batting at number eight, scored 67 which was the first half-century for a Bermuda batsman in the tournament. Tucker, batting at number seven, scored 21 and Daniel Caines hit 24. Tucker and Robinson shared in a stand of 52 for the seventh wicket and Robinson and Caines put on 68 for the ninth wicket.

There are still two days left in the tournament but England have already won the title, having picked up their fifth straight win yesterday, beating Ireland. Today England have a bye while Bermuda close out their tournament against Denmark and Scotland play Holland and Ireland meet Canada.

Tomorrow, Bermuda have a bye while Canada play Denmark, Holland meet Ireland and Scotland take on England. The Bermuda team will return home on Tuesday evening.

KWAME TUCKER -- top scored with 26 against Ireland and hit a dogged 21 against Canada.
