Trojans search for new goals

Division match, Somerset Trojans coach Randy Horton says he is not concerned about gaining a berth in the Dudley Eve competition.

With just three weeks left in order for the four top teams to qualify for the popular Dudley Eve competition over the Christmas break, only the top three positions seems to have been wrapped up, with North Village, Boulevard and Vasco having laid their claim. Fourth place can go to one of four teams, including the Trojans, but the westenders have other priorities.

"I am not interested in the Dudley Eve. I'm interested in us performing well and at the end of the day being able to finish among the top four. Being in the top four just in order to play in the Dudley Eve is of no importance to us,'' said Horton.

"We just want to get positive results. We have to play the three top teams after one another and it's really a barometer for us in terms of just how well we are doing. I think we have played well up to this point, but we just haven't put the ball into the back of the net with any consistency.'' Horton is hoping his team will improve on last Sunday's performance when they fell to a 2-1 home loss to Southampton Rangers after having enough chances to settle it earlier.

In Boulevard, the Trojans face a second-place team that pumped by a 3-0 win over PHC a week ago, a victory spearheaded by Kenny Hill who returned to action after a long lay-off with two goals. Kick-off is at 9.00 p.m. at Somerset CC. The game will be preceded by a Junior Division clash between the two clubs.

Meanwhile, two featured matches tomorrow will go a long way toward separating the four teams expected to make formidable challenges for the First Division title. At Bernard Park, leaders North Village will be forced to produce their best in order to beat visiting Vasco, while at St. John's field, host Dandy Town entertain defending champions Devonshire Colts.

Village struggled before edging Hotels 1-0 at home last Sunday and then followed this up with a similar one-goal defeat against Colts in the Friendship Trophy on Thursday night. At St. John's field, Dandy Town could spell trouble for Colts. Town have seeminly recovered after a sluggish start to the season and last Sunday's whopping 6-0 triumph over Cougars could be the spark coach Mark Trott was looking for from his forwards.

DARTS DRT Steve Hayward took the early lead after the first week of play-offs to determine who will represent Bermuda in the 1998 Caribbean Darts Championships.

Hayward registerd nine wins in 11 matches during the 12-man round-robin, one more than Vernon Daniels, Steve Gair and Dave Griffin. Four other players missed the matches because of other commitments.

Only eight of the 16 players will make the trip to St. Lucia and 16 weeks of play-offs will be held to determine who goes. The women's team is already settled, with Joy Simpson, Terry Cartwright, Dawn Bealing, Brenda Hutton and Liz Simons being named to the squad.
