And both succeeded, although the returning Otis Ingham could not prevent Robbie Smith from running away with three more firsts in the 125 B class during rainy conditions.

Jamel Hassell in the 80cc class was not so lucky, as American teenager Brandon Ray Bartz stopped him in his tracks by winning the first and third motos.

Former international rider Ingham pushed Smith to the limit in the top class.

Ingham led during the early laps before the class leader rallied to take three firsts with Ingham second in each moto, leaving Justin Belboda to finish with two thirds and Chris Maxwell one third.

Some 30 riders braved the wet conditions, among them 14-year-old Bartz of Illinois, here for two race days.

Bartz, riding in the 80cc class, made an immediate impression, finishing with two firsts and a second as the top rider in the class, Hassell, had to settle for a first and a second. Riding a bike borrowed from Vincent Trott, Bartz was quick to adapt to the Bermuda conditions, which he admitted were different to what he was used to in the US.

After he won the first moto and Hassell the second, the stage was set for an exciting third race with the pair tied on points.

Bartz got another good start over Hassell, Craig Panchaud and the rest of the field and held on to win as Panchaud moved up to second and Shaki Easton third with Hassell having to settle for fourth which was good enough for second overall on the day.

Hassell will be seeking revenge over Bartz when they clash again this Sunday in the Brian Castle Memorial.

In the 1225 C class Kemo Simons had three firsts, Stephan Lightbourne three seconds and Lawrence Noble three thirds. In the Pee Wee divisions Maurice Symons, Lawrenzo Trott and Chris DeSilva won the 50, 80 and 60cc classes respectively. Symons and Trott each had three firsts while DeSilva had two firsts and a second as Steven Panchaud denied him a hat-trick of victories.

OUT IN FRONT -- Robbie Smith (8) finished with three firsts in the 125 B class during Sunday's motocross racing at Coney Island.
