Wolves aim for a Cup Final first
victories, Dandy Town and North Village looked a good bet to advance to the final.
But league losses by both teams to newly-promoted PHC has suddenly changed all that and given their opponents Wolves and Vasco hope ahead of tonight's matches at Somerset.
Wolves, who have never reached the Martonmere final, have a good opportunity to do so when they meet Village in the 7.00 opener while Vasco play Town in the nightcap at 9.00.
Village followed up their two Martonmere Cup wins with two losses in the league to PHC and Devonshire Colts, suggesting they haven't quite got it right yet. But with Kentoine Jennings back in the line-up their defence will be tougher to penetrate.
Wolves are fresh off a 5-0 thrashing of St. David's in the league and will rely on the likes of Ellington Weldon, Nathan Webb and former Village player Nakia Smith to penetrate Village's defence. Weldon netted a hat-trick in the St. David's game while the bustling Webb got another.
Vasco may not be the team they were a year ago but Keith Jennings and Dwight Basden up front still represent a fearful partnership.
However, Another booking for Jennings on Sunday against Somerset means that he will have to sit out tonight's match. Either Jamel Smith or Larance Durham could start in his place against Town, the defending champions.
Stoke City's Bermudian striker Kyle Lightbourne was sent off for the second time in his professional career on Saturday after receiving a second yellow card in the match against Reading.
Stoke still fought back to win 2-1 to climb to third place in the English Second Division.
Lightbourne, booked in the 48th minute, was ejected in the 77th minute for a second yellow card. He was last sent off in 1996 while playing for Walsall against Bristol City, also for two yellows.
