Bermuda's batsmen in Bishop's sights

against West Indies Test fast bowler Ian Bishop during Saturday's fourth annual cricket testimonial match at Lord's.

He is scheduled to arrive in Bermuda just before noon tomorrow. The players, who have yet to be named, will be included in two teams that will feature in the 40 overs game with the move being designed to give them much needed experience against genuine pace bowling beforer next month's tournament in Guyana.

St. Clair (Brinky) Tucker, spokesman for the Cricket Testimonial Committee, said that facing Bishop was a challenge that the players were looking forward to with enthusiasm.

"Naturally the players are excited about it, the national coaches should be thrilled -- as should the sporting public. The opportunity will be of tremendous benefit for the players, especially since they never have a chance to face a bowler of his calibre prior to entering a major tournament like the Red Stripe,'' he said.

The format calls for Bishop to bowl in both innings. Incidentally, some of them will be facing him when Bermuda play their first Red Stripe match against Trinidad and Tobago on October 7.

In addition to confirming Bishop's role in assisting the Red Stripe players, Tucker revealed that this year's format at Lord's will operate the same as a year ago with lunch with the presentation to the honourees taking place between the innings.

The respective captains of the two sides will be Gladstone (Sad) Brown and Lionel Thomas, two former Bermuda national team players.

The honourees this year are Nathaniel Proctor, Norwood Smith and Tommy Atcheson.

Proceeds from the $5 admission fee will go towards the Bermuda Cricket Board of Control's development programme.

"The main objective of our committee was to help the cricket's youth development and we are particularly encouraged and excited this year to see a decent youth league revised for the first time in eight years,'' said Tucker.

"Board president El James and the chairman of the youth development committee Randy Horton have worked hard to get it going and it's our intention to continue to assist them in the form of fund-raising endeavours such as this.'' An added bonus for spectators this year will be the chance to win a round trip ticket to Barbados next year to witness the Test between West Indies and Australia, courtesy of Meyer Limited.

Tucker also announced that his committee is holding a welcoming reception for Bishop at Police field on Friday evening at 7 p.m. The public is invited.

Saturday's match begins at 11 a.m.
