Boulevard send out early warning

of the Martonmere Cup competition last night, as they ran roughshod over 1992 finalists PHC in the curtain-raiser at BAA field.

First half goals by forwards Dwight Warren and Kenny Hill proved decisive in this tie, that provided much excitement for the hungry and vociferous crowd on hand.

While the first shot on goal -- a feeble free-kick attempt by Sammy Swan from the edge of the area after four minutes that was easily collected by goalkeeper Mitchell Steede -- went to the Zebras, this was by no means an indication of what was to come, as the skill and determination of Boulevard soon took over.

Warren was his usual tormenting self and his main partner, midfielder Clinton Caisey, similarly was a handful for his opposite number when pressing the attack.

It was Warren causing some anxiety in the 11th minute, as he received a pass from right-midfielder Neil Robinson and launched a curling left-footed shot from long range that sailed just wide of PHC goalkeeper Ty Williams' far post.

Two minutes later Hill was late connecting on a header, which also went wide of the mark.

Hill again was involved in the 26th minute of play when his attempted flick of a cross by Vernon Eve, overlapping from his left-back position, was blocked and fell at the feet of Stevie Wade, who agonized as his low drive was smothered by a quick recovering Williams.

However, there would be no saving grace for PHC 26 minutes on, when Kenny Darrell surged forward along the right side and centred to an onrushing Warren, leaving the latter with the simple task of slotting the ball home past an exposed Williams.

This further ignited the Blazers and they exploded with numerous attacking moves.

The trademark short passing, possession game was well in evidence and they were able to pounce on most of the loose balls, moving swiftly from defence to attack.

PHC had few answers, allowing Hill, Wade and Warren to parade into their penalty area and dictate the run of play.

Mike Dill and his men worked hard, but the difference in class was obvious as it was only a matter of time before Boulevard increased their advantage.

That moment came in the 32nd minute and was largely do to the efforts of Robinson, again given free reign along the right side.

His mazy run enabled him to elude defender Roderick Lewis and chip the ball into the penalty area. And while the initial shot was blocked by Williams, Hill made no mistake with the rebound, slamming the ball home from some eight yards.

A virtual carbon copy of the opening period occurred in the second half, with the only difference being the lack of an adequate scoring touch by the Blazers.

Williams cannot be faulted for the way his defence often deserted him, as PHC constantly found themselves back-peddling against the Boulevard attacks.
