Kirkland is Island's supreme Optimist

sailors taking part in the Optimist World Championships in Martinique.

Kirkland finished the 11-race series 162nd in the rankings out of 220 competitiors with a best finish of 15th in the penultimate race and a net total of 380 points after two discards.

Next best was 15-year-old A.J.Black, who achieved Bermuda's best race placing when he finished 10th in the last race, just one place ahead of 12-year-old Jonathan Kempe.

Black was 169th overall with 400 points and Kempe 186th with 452 points.

Thirteen-year-old James Doughty finished 207th on 537 points with a best race placing of 38th, while 12-year-old Brown was 208th with 563 points and a best placing of 57th.

CONSISTENCY THE KEY FOR PORT ROYAL SLG Consistency the key for Port Royal Port Royal crept ahead in the Coronation Cup standings after the latest round of fitted dinghy races at Sandy's Boat Club.

In conditions which called for number two rigs and which kept the bailers working hard, Port Royal finished second in both races.

The first race was won by Contest and the second by Elizabeth , skippered by Alan Powell in the absence of Malcolm Smith, who is challenging for a medal at the Pan Am Games in Winnipeg.

Victory sank in the second heat, as she approached the leeward mark.
