Vasco close gap on leaders Colts

Dandy Town blew a 1-0 half-time lead as Vasco came back in the second half to snatch victory in this make-up league match at Somerset last night.

The win lifted Vasco to within three points of leaders Devonshire Colts in what is shaping up to be a two-team race for the league championship with four matches remaining.

Town carried on where they left off in their recently abandoned match against Vasco, scoring after just seven minutes through Darron Simons following a Carlos Smitb cross, only to see Vasco reply early and late in the second half through an Earl Richardson penalty and a strike from Dwight Basden to stay in the hunt for a second straight league title.

The loss leaves Town tied on 22 points with North Village and Boulevard, but the seven point gap they have to close with just four matches remaining leaves them with only a slim chance of catching Colts.

Vasco had a call for a penalty ignored by referee Richard Knight in the 25th minute when Steven Arorash was challenged by Lloyd Christopher.

The closest Vasco came in the first half to equalising was in the 36th minute when Paul Towlson's shot from outside the box smashed against the crossbar with Cymande Davis beaten.

The game was played at a fast pace and both teams went close in the dying minutes of the first half.

Smith, the main threat up front for Stars, put a shot against the post in the 43rd minute after a touch by Tucker on the right side of the box. Then Davis had trouble with a Sammy Swan header just under the bar and it was eventually cleared for a corner at the second attempt.

Vasco finally got back on level terms five minutes after the restart when Simons fouled Stapley inside the Town penalty area and Richardson scored from the penalty spot, even though Davis judged correctly and partially blocked the ball with his body.

Smith drove a freekick from 25 yards just past the near post as the game picked up again. Soon after a dangerous ball into the VBasco penalty area by Devarr Boyles went untouched across goal.

Vasco boosted their attack by bringing on Irving Burgess for Frankie Simmons in the 55th minute with Town responding by replacing winger Damon Ming with Seyoum Tuzo minutes later.

Burgess quickly got involved, poking a shot inches over the bar as the game hung in the balance going into the final 20 minutes.

Vasco would score what turned out to be the winner 10 minutes from the end when a cross from the right by Swan was knocked down by Burgess and Dwight Basden blasted his effort past Davis from 10 yards.
