Wolves produce major upset
(after extra-time) First they took their frustration out on the dressing room windows, then two Vasco players -- Dwight Basden and Albert Wolffe -- turned on each other as defeat against Second Division was too hard to take last night at Devonshire Rec.
As they were in the first game on Sunday, Wolves did not let their opponents stamp their authority on the match even after Clevon Hill's 30th minute penalty was saved by Timmy Figureido.
Within minutes Vasco had the first of their problems when Sinclair Gibbons was sent off for showing dissent after referee Richard Knight booked him for a foul on Tori Davis. Moments after entering the changing room Gibbons took his frustration out on the glass window and more glass was broken at halftime as Vasco went into the half still deadlocked.
They should have taken the lead right on the half but Steven Arorash shot wide of an open goal after beating 'keeper Nigel Burgess to the ball.
Despite being a man down Vasco showed their class early in the second half with some fluent attacking moves as substitute Taur Caisey boosted their midfield. Before long, though, Wolves were back on par and went close in the 66th minute when John Barry Nusum hooked a shot inches over the bar from a Davis freekick.
Vasco snatched the lead in the 68th minute when a pass put Basden free of the defence and he carried the ball into the box before placing a low shot into the far bottom corner.
Wolves defender Joey Rego was carried off on a stretcher two minutes later after falling heavily following an ariel challenge with Figureido. After five minutes of treatment the stubborn youngster returned and in the 82nd minute equalised from Wolves' second penalty, this time awarded when John Barry Nusum's goalbound shot from a corner was handed by a defender on the goalline.
Vasco had the best chances to seal the match in extra time as Irving Burgess put an effort over the bar when with just the 'keeper to beat in the first period and then Arorash's long range shot went just over the top.
Two quick raids at the start of the first half let Vasco know Wolves were still in contention and after Livingston blasted well over the top after Burgess set him up with just the goalkeeper to beat, Wolves decided to make them pay.
The winning goal came three minutes before the end of the second extra time period when a cross from the right by substitute Leo Ming saw Webb collide with the advancing Figureido as they met the ball but to the delight of the wolves players and fans the ball rolled about 10 yards into the empty goal, sealing Wolves' first ever place in the FA Cup semi-final.
