Stovell: It's good to be back with Bermuda

Dion Stovell may be scoring runs for fun in the Premier Division, but he says that's no guarantee that he can do the same thing for Bermuda

The Southampton Rangers batsman has been recalled to the national squad by new head coach David Moore after a season that has seen him play a staring role in his club's climb to the top of the table.

With Bermuda struggling for runs at the top of the order in recent matches, the hope is that Stovell will provide the national team with the sort of flying start he has been giving Rangers on an almost weekly basis.

And Stovell credits his club with helping him rediscover the form that made him an ever present in the youth teams before his well-publicised run in with BCB executive Gary Fray several years ago.

"I've been concentrating more, I like playing for Rangers, guys up here support me, I'm in good nick," said Stovell. "That doesn't mean I am going to score runs for the country, but we'll see what happens.

"It (his form) gives me a chance to get in there, but scoring runs in club and country is two different things. I might score runs in the league, but not for Bermuda, but that's how it goes, it's cricket.

"I'm a little fitter, my concentration level's a little higher, but I haven't changed much in the way I play. But Bermuda cricket's easy, there ain't nothing too hard about it."

At one stage the prospect of Stovell returning to the national side would have seemed impossible, especially as he and the Bermuda Cricket Board have rarely seen eye-to-eye. However, the opener said Moore convinced him to give international cricket another try, and he is determined to repay the Australian.

"I had my views why I wasn't playing for the squad, and I'm pretty sure everybody knows what they were," said Stovell. "But now I've sat down and talked to him (Moore) one-on-one, and put my point of view across.

"He's a good guy, he's given me another chance, when we talked I told him I'd give him 100 percent, and we'll see where it goes after that."

Stovell has already been training with the national squad, and will continue to do so as preparations begin for the World Cup qualifiers in Dubai next April. For Moore it means the return of a player who has an international double-hundred to his name.

"It feels good to be back," said Stovell. "I've talked to the coach and everything's cool. I talked to him about the issues I had with the Board before, and it feels good to be back and training with the boys. I'm focussed now."
